(VERNON, NY) – It has simply been too long since Darryl Ruggles had graced CRSA Sprints presented by Super Gen Products Victory Lane and that changed with force on Friday night at Utica-Rome Speedway.

The 2020 CRSA Sprints series champion hadn’t won since late September of his series championship year. The odds were certainly against him with drawing the tenth starting spot in the 20-lap starting field. Eighteen cars started the main event after Land of Legends winner Alysha Bay, Ethan Gray, Alex Adamsky, Mike Kiser and Weedsport Speedway winner Billy VanInwegen all encountered trouble early in the night.

Point leader Jordan Hutton and Thomas Radivoy led the field to “Jumpin Joe” Kriss’ green flag and it was the latter in Radivoy who controlled the race early on. Ruggles immediately went to work, picking off four cars on the opening lap before the yellow was displayed on Lap 1 for Tomy Moreau who went for a spin in Turn 4.

That yellow allowed Ruggles to gather himself back up and go back to work after a single-file restart. Radivoy again was able to make the top side of the racetrack work as the fast way around but the bottom groove was just starting to come in for Ruggles. On Lap 5 Ruggles showed the way out front going to Turn 3 but another caution flag slowed the field- handing the lead back to Radivoy on the restart.

“When I showed my colors to (Radivoy) I thought I was in trouble for the next restart,” noted Ruggles in Victory Lane.

“When he went into one I knew he was carrying way too much speed so I said ‘thank you’ and went to the bottom.”

That’s just exactly how Ruggles got the lead for good officially on Lap 6. The race went the rest of the way green which put Ruggles in some heavy traffic late in the going. Jeff Trombley who started twelfth, following his win at Fonda Speedway a few weeks ago, was slowly working his way forward. While Trombley passed the eye test for speed, it just wasn’t enough.

“I think we really needed another yellow there to see what we had for (Ruggles),” reflected Trombley.

“The track was beautiful and really made it a lot of fun out there.”

Kyle Pierce started fourth, fell back as far as seventh in the order and figured out late in the going just how good his car was on the bottom. Pierce rallied back for third.

“My car was really good there at the end, I just figured it out around lap eleven or twelve and didn’t have enough time to get up there with the leaders.”

Radivoy led several laps and takes a lot of positives away from a fourth place finish as they continue to show speed in the No. 1Q. Dalton Herrick also found a good line and picked off a couple spots at the end to sneak the last spot in the Top 5 away from point leader Jordan Hutton.

The races Powdertech Powdercoating Hard Charger of the race went to Trombley who passed ten cars on his way to second place. Trombley also earned the Maguire Cars “Magnificent Move of the Race.” Aaron Shelton took home the Midstate Basement Authorities “Out of the Basement” bonus award.

The CRSA Sprints will now head to Thunder Mountain Speedway on Sunday July 3 in a highly anticipated show as part of their 4th of July celebration.
