Ricky Thornton Jr. Lands Podium in Bristol Dirt Nationals
Taking part in the inaugural Bristol Dirt Nationals at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, Ricky Thornton Jr. was one of 115 Modifieds to register for the highly anticipated event.
A pair of preliminary programs would set the stage for Friday’s $7,500-to-win Modified finale.
On Tuesday, Thornton raced to a fourth-place finish in his heat race to lock into the tenth starting position for the qualifying feature. He advanced four spots in the 20-lapper to place sixth.
Wednesday’s preliminary action saw Thornton rocket from the fourth starting spot pick up a heat race victory. Earning the third spot on the feature grid, Ricky charged to his fourth win of the season ahead of Kyle Heckman, Jeff Taylor, Paul Stone, Justin Obrien.
Thornton’s preliminary efforts earned him the 12th starting position for Friday night’s finale for the Modified division. Starting the 20-lap affair in 12th, Ricky marched his way through the field to record a solid third place outing behind Kyle Heckman and Cory Davis. J.D. Auringer and Clay Money rounded out the Top-5 finishers.
Pulling double duty on Friday, Thornton also entered the Super Late Model portion of the Bristol Dirt Nationals. After falling behind in qualifying, Ricky charged from ninth to grab the fourth and final transfer spot in his heat race. He would go on to start and finish 16th in the $10,000-to-win feature.
