RTJ wins Gordie Rivera Memorial opener at Cocopah

Ricky Thornton Jr. was back in action at Cocopah Speedway (Somerton, Ariz.) on Friday afternoon to return to the driver’s seat of his Excel Floor Covering No. 20RT Modified for the two-day Gordie Rivera Memorial. With a heat race victory placing him fourth on the starting grid for the feature, Thornton Jr. charged to his seventh win of the season, which came ahead of D.J. On Saturday, Ricky gained six spots in his heat race to register a second-place finish. Starting the $5,000-to-win finale in third, Thornton Jr. carried a steady pace throughout the 30-lapper to finish third. He trailed Kollin Hibdon and Kyle Brown to the checkers with Jeff Taylor and Ricky Alvarado rounding out the Top-5.
