Stevens Competes in ‘Dega Crate Racin USA Doubleheader
Tyler Stevens trekked southeast to Talledega Short Track (Eastaboga, Ala.) over the weekend to compete in a doubleheader with the Crate Racin’ USA Late Model Series as the series paid tribute to the legendary Red Farmer. On Friday night 39 entries were on hand for the $3,700-to-win event, and struggles in qualifying left Tyler buried in a B-Main. He charged from the tail of the field to grab the fourth-and-final transfer spot on the last lap of the consolation event.
Starting 20th on the grid for the feature, Stevens streaked to an eighth-place finish.
On Saturday night the winner’s purse was increased to $6,000, and Tyler got a much better start to the night by setting fast time in his group before winning his heat race to lock into the third-starting spot for the finale. In the main event he charged to the lead early and was enjoying six-plus second advantage with five laps remaining when his engine expired, ending his night early. Stevens was credited with a 14th-place finish in the final rundown.
“Man, just a total heartbreaker, that’s all I can say,” Stevens noted. “Friday night I buried us but we rallied in the feature. On Saturday night everything went perfectly to plan until the engine let go with five laps to go. We had a huge lead, and it’s just sickening. This was our only motor so our season is probably over, and we’ll just start getting ready for next year.”
