Luke Deatrick Claims 1st Career Super Sportsman Win at BAPS Motor Speedway

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Luke Deatrick was out of breath and could barely speak after Saturday’s Super Sportsman main event at BAPS Motor Speedway.

All of his passion, all of the effort he has put in the sport, came rushing out in those moments after climbing out of his car on the frontstretch. Deatrick couldn’t have asked for a better ending.

For the first time in his Super Sportsman career, Deatrick collected the victory in the 25-lap BAPS Paint Super Sportsman feature at the speedway. The script was perfect. He chased down the leader, made the winning pass, and held off his uncle, Russ Mitten to kick start a celebration that was long overdue.

“I think you’ve got to pinch me,” an exhausted Deatrick said. “Oh, my, God. It all starts with my uncle. If you look at the serial number on this car, it’s .004, and that was 2007. We are in 2019, which is a testament to him.

“I know Ben’s [Woodring] got some great cars out here, too, and Garrett Williamson runs a Sledgecraft, as well, but my uncle builds a hell of a race car. I switched to the old-style frame last year, and it’s wider and works better for me. I felt more comfortable.

“Giz and Randy … if he quits, I would quit. He puts in more hours than me. He’s the first one at the shop and last one at the shop. My wife, my parents, two brothers, my crew, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, everybody helps. I never thought I would be here.”

Deatrick started third on the grid and was fast through the early stages, but pole-sitter Tyler Wolford grabbed the early lead over Jay Fannasy, and the top two drivers were setting a blistering pace.

Wolford and Fannasy were pinned to the bottom of the speedway and were able to keep Deatrick at bay. Still, the 35-year-old kept pressing and making time on the top of the speedway.

Deatrick got by Fannasy and chased down Wolford. Finally, he slipped by on the 14th circuit and was able to distance himself from the field.

“I knew I was good in three and four on the high side,” Deatrick said. “in one and two, Tyler and Jay were getting me coming off. I went to the bottom once, and that was a horrible idea, so I said, ‘I won’t do that again.’

“I knew if I kept hitting my marks going into three, riding the brake a little, staying on the throttle, and when I can feel the right rear grab, I floor it.

“Luckily, Tyler gave me enough room coming off four, and I was just drag racing down the frontstretch going into turn 1 hoping to clear him. It worked out in our favor, and once I got out there, I just kept telling myself, ‘Luke, don’t mess up.’”

Deatrick kept the car straight and finished off the win with ease, besting the field by 2.97 seconds at the finish.

Russ Mitten came from seventh to finish second. Wolford, Fannasy, and Super Sportsman 100 winner Scott Dellinger completed the top five. Kenny Edkin finished sixth and capped his track championship run.

In Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model action, Bobby Beard started on the outside pole and dominated the 20-lap affair.

Beard got the jump on pole-sitter Travis Mease and went untouched the rest of the way to locking up his track championship run. Chase Billet, Wes Bonebrake, Sean Merkel, and Mease completed the top five.

Brian Walls sped away from the 17-car Morgan Paving/Aqua Fun Pools Street Stock field and captured the 20-lap main event. Walls was also crowned track champion in the division.

There were seven cautions over the race distance, but no one had anything for Walls, who led from the outset. Mike Walls, Chad Smith, Will Walls, and Greg Diehl completed the top five.

The Superior Homes Extreme Stock feature was a wild one and when the race was finally complete, Keith Bissinger was in Victory Lane after the 20-lap feature. Patrick McClane, Donnie Broderick, Nate Hill, and John Wright finished out the top five
