Iron-Man Late Model Series
Owens Dominates Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series Hall of Fame 40
BURNSIDE, KENTUCKY (July 4, 2021)– The Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Northern and Southern Series would wrap up the 2021 Fourth of July racing weekend with the Hall of Fame 40 at Lake Cumberland Speedway in Burnside, KY and Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN would lead all forty laps of the event and claim the $5,000 payday.
The victory by the 49-year old Owens would be his fourth career Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series victory and would come aboard a Rocket Chassis powered by a Vic Hill Race Engine with sponsorship from Ramirez Motorsports, Tim Short Automotive Group, Reece Monument Company, Georgia Arms Ammunition, Boom-Test Well Service, Red Line Oil, Sunoco Race Fuels, and Tommy Pope Construction.
Jimmy Owens would jump to the lead at the start of the feature event, with Jensen Ford, Michael Chilton, Devin Gilpin, and Dustin Linville giving chase. Tommy Bailey would work past Linville for the fifth position on lap three, while Owens would immediately stretch his lead. Ford and Chilton would settle into a side-by-side battle for the second position, with Chilton gaining the spot on lap six, while Devin Gilpin would work under Ford for the third spot one circuit later. Owens would begin to work traffic on lap eleven and continued to drive away from the field, while Gilpin would chase down Chilton and take second position on lap sixteen. Ford, Bailey, and Dustin Nobbe would begin a three-way battle for the fourth position, with Nobbe taking fifth from Bailey on lap twenty-two. Owens would lap up to the sixth place car of Bailey by lap twenty-seven and continue to cruise when the only caution of the event waved as the field worked lap thirty when Larry Greer made contact with the outside retaining wall in turn three and while Greer’s machine was being towed off the track, second place Gilpin would have to go to the work area and change a flat right-rear tire and return. Owens would quickly motor away from the field on the restart, while Nobbe would take third Ford on lap thirty-one, only to have Ford reclaim the third position on lap thirty-six. However, there would be no one catch Owens and he would claim the win, with Chilton finishing second and Ford finishing third. Gilpin would work his way past Nobbe on the final lap to nip him for fourth and finish, with Nobbe settling for fifth. The remainder of the top ten finishers would be Bailey, Tristan Chamberlain, Derek Fisher, Ted Nobbe, and Gavin Schmidt.
