The victory by the 49-year old Owens would be his third career Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series victory and would come aboard a Rocket Chassis powered by a Vic Hill Race Engine with sponsorship from Ramirez Motorsports, Tim Short Automotive Group, Reece Monument Company, Georgia Arms Ammunition, Boom-Test Well Service, and Tommy Pope Construction.
Randy Weaver would take the race lead at the start of the 9th Annual Scott Sexton Memorial main event, with Jimmy Owens, Ashton Winger, Dale McDowell, and Mike Marlar giving chase. Marlar would take fourth from McDowell on lap two, but McDowell would retake the fourth position on lap four. Weaver and Owens would distance themselves from the rest of the field and the lead duo would start working slower traffic on lap nine. By lap fifteen, Weaver and Owens would have almost a full straightaway back to third-place Winger, with McDowell and Marlar staying fourth and fifth. Owens would begin to move around and begin pressuring Weaver for the lead and would pull alongside Weaver to complete lap twenty-four and would take the lead of the event entering turn three as the pair came to complete lap twenty-five. Owens would maintain a comfortable lead out front and by lap thirty-seven would begin to slowly march away from second place Weaver. Owens would go unchallenged the remainder of the event and score the win, with Weaver, Winger, McDowell, and Marlar completing the top five. Pierce McCarter would finish in the sixth position, with Ricky Weiss, Dustin Linville, Chase King, and Hudson O’Neal finishing seventh through tenth.
The next event for the Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Southern Series will be at Friday June 4 at Wartburg Speedway in Wartburg, TN and Saturday June 5 at I-75 Raceway in Sweetwater, TN. Both events will pay $4,000 to win.
