Inside Line Promotions – JONESTOWN, Pa. (Oct. 21, 2020) – Joey Amantea overcame a high pill draw to qualify for the 31st annual National Open at Linda's Speedway last weekend.
Amantea was one of the final 59 drivers to qualify during the marquee micro sprint event that began on Friday. He then spent the remainder of the weekend hustling to come away with a top-20 result. It was the 48th top 20 of the season for the Mt. Pocono, Pa., native.
"From the second we got to the track we knew we were in for a tough go of things," he said. "We got a horrible pill draw and the track was not set for my style at all. We just grinded all weekend."
Amantea kicked off the weekend on Friday when he timed in 33rd overall with a fastest lap of 13.485 seconds. He then started sixth in a heat race and advanced one position to finish fifth.
While the results were not good enough to lock him straight into the Saturday finale, Amantea did secure himself safely in the B Main in the third starting position. With five cars advancing to the feature event, Amantea picked up the B Main victory on Saturday to earn the 25th starting spot in the A Main.
"We were set up pretty well in that we were already in the B Main and it made my job fairly easy," he said. "We ended up winning the thing and that gave us some confidence heading into the A Main."
Amantea passed five cars to finish 20th on a track where passing was at a premium.
"The track was really tough to figure out conditions-wise and it was really a struggle to move forward," he said. "I found myself battling really hard for like 19th and with about 10 laps to go I decided to just take it easy and make sure we came home in one piece.
"I wasn't so much disappointed in myself as I did what I could based on the conditions presented to me, but ultimately it wasn't the weekend we had hoped for.”
Next up for Amantea will be two more nights of wingless 600cc micro sprint competition. On Friday he'll head to Greenwood Valley Action Tracks in Orangeville, Pa., for the 20th annual Blaise Alexander Memorial Race before venturing to Spirit Auto Center Speedway in Swedesboro, N.J., on Saturday for track’s season finale.
