Tommy Knippenberg's return to late-model racing took a big step Friday night when the two-time Mid-American champion almost pulled off a feature win.
He led several laps of the 30-lap feature before giving way to eventual winner Eddie Hoffman.
Hoffman and Knippenberg's older brother, Billy, are in a close race for the late-model title. As it turned out, Tommy held off Billy for second place. Andy Jones was fourth, followed by Ricky Baker and Jim Weber.
"It was a handful, but it was a blast," Tommy Knippenberg said. "It's good to be back out here in a late-model and actually compete. I think we're on to something here. A few more races and we'll see if we can get us a win."
