Wells, Karl, White and Halcomb Win at Sandusky Night #3
Sandusky Speedway ran their third event of the young racing season on Saturday night, May 21st. Modified standout Jason Wells finally broke through for his first feature win of the season at the conclusion of a mayhem-filled feature that saw a handful of cars taken off on the wrecker during a single back stretch caution. Jerry Karl went three for three on the season in the sportsman division while Mike White extended his streak to two wins in the street stocks. Brandon Halcomb won in his first start of the season in the Hobby Stock division.
Joe Brooks would lead the field to the green with LJ Stanley quickly passing Brooks for the lead in turn four coming to complete lap one. Mayhem would strike early on lap three as Clayton Oliver would get up in the air and sail into the turn two tires bringing out the red flag. Oliver would be transported to a local hospital as a precautionary measure after complaining about back pain. LJ Stanley, Mike Parks, Ron Nordstrom, Brandon Halcomb and Joe Oliver would bring the field back to the green.
Halcomb and Joe Oliver would be on the move on the restart with Halcomb taking the second spot on lap five and Oliver taking third on lap seven. Halcomb would pass Stanley for the lead on lap eight while Oliver would take the runnerup position on lap eleven. Mike Parks would pass the struggling Stanley machine on lap twelve for the third spot and Kelly Lille would pass Stanley with five to go for the fourth position. Halcomb would win over Joe Oliver, Parks, Lille, Stanley, Richard Clem, Stanley, Dan Smith, Ron Nordstrom, Mike McDonald and John Collins.
In the sportsman division, Jerry Karl would make quick work of the competition from starting seventh. Karl would be up to third by turn one of lap three, pass for second by turn three of the same lap, and take the lead on the front straightaway on lap seven. Jerry Karl would win over Joe Borczuch, Jeff Karl, Rich Clingan, Logan Cooper, Randy Wedell, and John Karl.
The modified division would be up next as eighteen of the weekly short track kings of the asphalt universe would thunder to life led by Joey Wyckoff and Steven Drew. Jason Wells would quickly take over the lead in turn three on lap two but Ryan Winningham would spin on the front straightaway before the lap was complete. Wyckoff would lead Wells, Steven Drew, Jeremie Wiggins, and Tom Joy back to the restart. Wells would take the lead on the restart with Kenny Phillips taking fifth on lap four. Winningham would spin again on lap nine. Wells, Wyckoff, Wiggins, Mark Bott, and Kenny Phillips would be the order for the restart.
A massive pileup would occur on this start as Tom Joy, Travis Eddy, Joey Morisette, Logan Hamilton, Chris Hamilton, Kenny Sharp, and Kenny Phillips would all get tangled up on the back straightaway with only Chris Hamilton and Phillips able to restart. Phillips would get by Bott on the restart for fourth and Ryan Winningham would spin on lap seventeen for the third time and be parked as a result by race officials. Phillips would power by Wiggins on the restart and set his sights on Joey Wyckoff in the runnerup position. Phillips would pass Wyckoff with five to go and immediately go to work on Wells but it was too little too late as Wells would win over Kenny Phillips, Wyckoff, Wiggins, Chris Hamilton, Kenny Calhoun, Craig Phillips, Steven Drew, Jason Drew, Justin Hamilton, and Shawn Marder.
Next Sunday, May 29th, the speedway will host a special $1000 to win modified race. Sportsman, Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks will also be in attendance. A kids Gold Rush will also take place. Pits open at 3 with hot laps at four as qualifications will begin at 5:30 to set the grid for the racing action set to take place at 7 pm.
