Tyler Bruening tops IMS action for seventh win of 2019
By Ben Shelton (Decorah, IA) -- Tyler Bruening capped an up-and-down week of racing with a victory on Saturday night in his Skyline Motorsports No. 16 Bennett Explosives/ Bruening Rock Products/ Capital Race Car/ Clements Racing Engine Late Model at Iowa’s Independence Motor Speedway.
“Up-and-down is most definitely the best way to describe last week,” Bruening said. “When things went well, they went really well, and when they went bad, they went really bad. Our team never gave up though, and we ultimately ended the week with a win.

“I want to thank my dad, Zeb, and everyone who keeps me going fast. We’ll go after win No. 8 this Wednesday at Farley.”
Monday night found Tyler Bruening in action at Plymouth Dirt Track (Plymouth, Wisconsin), where he was kicking off his week with the World of Outlaws (WoO) Morton Buildings Late Model Series. With 33 cars registered for battle, Tyler followed up the third-fastest lap in his group with an 8-lap heat race victory. Slated to start the feature in the third position, a mechanical failure struck on the parade lap, forcing him to retire before ever completing a circuit at speed.
The following night at Shawano Speedway (Shawano, Wisconsin) for the Sundrop Shootout, Bruening recorded a fourth-place finish in his heat race, which positioned him 11th on the starting grid for the $10,000-to-win A-Main. Improving one spot in the 50-lap affair, Bruening crossed the finish line in 10th.
On Thursday evening at Cedar Lake Speedway (New Richmond, Wisconsin), for the opening night of the 32 annual USA Nationals, Tyler laid down the fastest time in a field of 45 cars before picking up a heat race win. Starting on the pole of the main event, Bruening ran in second for the opening 18 circuits until Brian Birkhofer snuck past. Running in a podium position throughout the remaining distance, Tyler Bruening notched a third-place finish behind Jonathan Davenport and Brian Birkhofer with Tim McCreadie and Dale McDowell completing the Top-5 finishers.
Returning on Friday afternoon for two rounds of heat races, Tyler salvaged a sixth-place finish in his first heat after getting collected in multiple tangles. Starting on the pole of his second heat, Bruening slipped back to a ninth-place outing as a mechanical failure forced him pitside.
Slated to start near the tail of his B-Main on Saturday, the teamed packed up and headed to Independence Motor Speedway (Independence, Iowa) for a Weekly Racing Series Event.
Earning the sixth-starting position for the A-Main, via preliminary events, Tyler worked his way into a podium spot early and began challenging for the lead following a caution with 10 to go. Blasting past Sean Johnson on the high side with a handful of laps remaining, Tyler Bruening recorded his seventh win of the season. Johnson, John Passick, Curt Martin, and Greg Kastli completed the Top-5 finishers.
