Macri and Pauch Claim Spring Valley Mulch Night Victories at BAPS Motor Speedway

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: There was a time when Anthony Macri was viewed as a driver who ran on the edge, ripping the top in a high stakes game of risk versus reward.
That’s no longer the case. Oh, Macri can get after it around the lip, but he is just as comfortable taking the methodical approach around the bottom in hopes of securing another victory.
Macri took the latter approach at BAPS Motor Speedway Sunday night. After starting sixth on the grid and getting passed by Devon Borden, the Dillsburg, Pa., driver decided to hit the bottom and used it to surge to the front for his seventh victory of the season on Spring Valley Mulch Night.
“We were a little tight in the beginning, and I was just trying to maintain,” Macri said. “Borden slid us, and I knew I had to get up on the wheel. Losing positions isn’t going to allow you to win races, so I started to run the bottom a little bit.
“I gained a little bit and lost a little bit, and at one point, I just started to focus on running the bottom to off of two right. We were able to run guys down going down the backstretch, and we were really hooked up on the bottom of three and four. Joe [Mooney] gave me a good car, and these guys work just as hard as anybody. So, win No. 7, and it’s pretty awesome.”
Troy Wagaman Jr. and T.J. Stutts occupied the front row for the 30-Lap main event. Before a lap could be completed, Australian Callum Williamson spun in the second corner. When the race went green a second time, Wagaman jumped out front.
Tyler Ross got a really good jump from his fourth-place starting spot and took second on the first circuit. He continued to use the outside on Lap 2, blowing by Wagaman for the top spot coming out of Turn 2.
The second and final caution came out with 11 laps down when Williamson shredded a tire going down the backstretch. Ross continued to lead on the restart, and Macri started to make his way to the front.
Macri slid into fourth on the 13th circuit, passing Danny Dietrich. Seven laps later, he tracked down Freddie Rahmer and took over the third spot.
Wagaman was closing in on the leader, but he was also being stalked. Macri got under the Heffner Racing machine for second on Lap 3, and he tracked down Ross for the lead two laps later.
Ross was having problems with lapped traffic and washed up the track on Lap 26. Macri nailed the bottom and held a slight lead at the flagstrand. In the next corner, Macri slid up in front of Ross and led the next four laps to cap the victory.
“When Joe gives me a good car, it makes my job easy,” Macri said. “So, he gave me a really good car, and I felt like I could put the car anywhere in one and two and had the confidence it would stick.
“A couple of wins gets the confidence high, and winning on the road was huge, too. It’s a team effort, and I think all of us are pretty confident, right now. When the morale is up, it makes races a little easier. We’re all getting along and doing our job. We also find time to joke around, and that’s important, too.”
Ross held off Wagaman for second. Point leader Danny Dietrich and Freddie Rahmer completed the top five in the main event.

In the 358 Modified main event, Billy Pauch Jr started on the pole and claimed the win in the 25-Lap feature. It wasn’t easy, though, as he had to hold Anthony Perrego off over the entire race distance.
Perrego wrestled the lead away from Pauch on the seventh circuit. Pauch returned the favor one lap later and led the rest of the way, taking the win by .600 seconds at the stripe.
Jared Umbenhauer completed the podium. Rick Laubach came from eighth to finish fourth, and Brandon Edgar completed the top five.
