HAGAR HUSTLES TO WIN NIGHT ONE OF THE WORLD SHORT TRACK CHALLENGE
WEST MEMPHIS, AR – October 18, 2024 -
Derek Hagar of Marion, AR started tenth and made a bold move to come from third to first on a lap 11 to take the lead and go on to win Night 1 of the World Short Track Challenge for the United Sprint Car Series Presented By K&N Filter and the American Sprint Car Series.
Dale Howard of Byhalia, MS finished second and Kyle Jones of Kennedale, TX took the third spot after starting 13th to earn the Wilwood Brakes Hard Charger of the Race Award. Matt Covington of Glenpool, OK was fourth and Landon Britt of Memphis, TN drove to a fifth-place finish.
Cody Gardner of Benton, AR took the sixth spot and Anton Hernandez of Arlington, TX finished seventh. Jason Martin of Liberal, KS drove to an eighth-place finish. Blake Hahn of Sapulpa, OK was ninth. Howard Moore of Memphis, TN rounded out the top ten.
In preliminary action, Lance Moss of Cherryville, NC was the overall Fast Qualifier among the 58 entrants with a lap of 11.744 seconds. The six ten-lap Heat Races were won by Tucker Boulton of Brighton, TN, Sam Hafertepe Jr. of Sunnyvale, TX, Hagar, Howard, Martin, and Britt.
The two 12-lap C-Main Races were won by Brandon Hanks of Burlison, TN and Marshall Skinner of Marion, AR. The two 15-lap B-Main Races were won by Seth Bergman of Snohomish, WA and Covington.
Hafertepe took the lead at the start of the 25-lap Feature Race from the outside of the front row followed by polesitter Hernandez, Hank Davis of Sand Springs, OK, Martin and Jones. Davis passed Hernandez for second on lap two while Hagar moved up from ninth to fourth. Jones passed Hagar for the fourth spot on lap three.
Jordon Mallett of Greenbrier, AR spun in turn one on lap four to bring out the caution flag. Hagar reclaimed the fourth spot on the restart by passing Jones. Britt moved into the top five on lap seven and Hernandez passed Davis to take back over the second spot.
The complexion of the race changed dramatically on lap ten when Hafertepe flipped out of the lead in turn two. When the race was restarted, Hagar came from the third spot to take the lead, followed by Hernandez, Britt, Howard, and Covington. Hahn spun in turn four on lap 11 to bring out a caution flag. Howard moved up to the third spot on the restart.
Covington passed Britt for fourth on lap 13, and Jones moved back up into the fourth spot on lap 14. On lap 19, Howard and Jones passed Hernandez to take over the second and third spots, respectively. Hanks flipped on lap 20 to bring out the red flag.
In the five lap dash to the finish, Covington passed Hernandez for the fourth spot on lap 22, and Britt passed Hernandez for fifth on lap 23, Hagar took a 1.610 second margin of victory over Howard under the checkered flag in a race that took 26 minutes and 3.807 seconds to complete.
The United Sprint Car Series Presented By K&N Filters returns to Riverside International Speedway on Saturday night, for the World Short Track Challenge finale paying $10,000-to-win, with Hagar and Howard earning starting spots for that event.
