Race Report 3 ~ April 15, 2017 ~~ Heat 3rd, Feature 4th
Oklahoma Sports Park, Pro-Stock #23
Driver: Gary Hunt, Crew Chief: Chad Weber, Crew: Jessy Weber
PRE-RACE:
Believing that our problems in the last feature were basically with the tires we were comfortable with the setup but felt it prudent to ask some questions of others with more experience on this track. Realizing that we were having trouble, Billy Starner of the 6x car (a two-time champion on this track) volunteered his experience. This much-appreciated advice resulted in some changes to weight distribution and tire setups.
HOT LAPS:
Everything seemed good, the car drove and looked great. It usually does on a freshly surfaced track; it is late into the night that the “dry slick” takes over and everything changes. That is our trouble spot.
HEAT RACE: ~3rd
Started outside the pole next to Mick Anderson #80 another multi year veteran of this track with a good car. On the green, Mick having the bottom took the lead as I dropped in tight behind him into second, I was full on, my car just did not have any more to offer. I held second for a few more laps then here comes Billy in the 6x squeezing between us, he took over second and I followed them around close as possible to finish third.
BETWEEN RACES:
Crew chief Chad Weber (a seasoned veteran of our last track Brill’s) suggested some changes for the upcoming feature where we were again the last class to run for the night knowing it would be bad slick. I totally agreed with the logic and he proceeded with the plan.
MAIN FEATURE: ~4th
The starting lineup was the same as the heat race and there was not much difference on the green. Soon I was following Mick and Billy as they duked it out for first and having trouble with the slick track eventually having to take an off-track excursion to the safety of the infield. Have not been there in a long while, I was embarrassed and it hurt my pride deeply. On the re-start I was in fourth and finished there without further incident.
OVERALL:
It was a great night, we learned a lot that we expect to be a help in the next races. It was a huge improvement over the last race and is restoring some of our lost confidence. More seat time on dry slick will also be a big help. If it were easy there would be no joy in winning. That’s Racing…
