Key Earns LCQ Appearance at Tulsa Shootout

TULSA, Okla. – Though his Tulsa Shootout started off in less-than-ideal style on December 30-31, Warrensburg, Mo. racer Kameron Key rang in the new year with flair. Appearing down for the count at the start of the final day of the event, January 2, Key came blistering back from the rear of a B-Main to move into the last chance qualifier, and came just shy of making his first Shootout feature start.
On the 30th, Key’s lone race was in the outlaw nonwing class, in which a massive entry county of 265 made up 30 heat races. He found himself in the first of those 30 heats, starting in fourth. The track didn’t offer much in terms of passing in the early heat races, and Key finished fourth as well.
The following morning, Key would compete in the outlaw wing class. 214 entries entered that division, with 24 heat races. Key began heat 19 from the pole, and handily took the victory by nearly half a lap. However, the right rear tire on the Waters Motorsports No. 7JR was deemed too soft, and their win was declared a disqualification, relegating them to the bottom of the point total.
Running fourth in the nonwing heat race just missed earning a qualifier start, and Key instead would start a C-Main on pole. The race was briefly delayed when a car struck the catch fence and damaged it, but was soon back underway, and Key motored to the win.
He wasn’t as successful in his wing portion, having to start 15th in a C-Main due to the earlier disqualification. Unable to maneuver into a transfer spot, Key was out for the remainder of the weekend in that division.
In nonwing, Key’s back was against a wall for his upcoming B-Main. Just 12 laps would determine who would move into the last chance qualifier for the feature race, and only two competitors transferred from each B-Main. Starting 13th, the outlook was bleak. But early in the event, it was clear that Key’s NPS Suzuki-powered MRP Chassis was on its way to the front. By lap nine, Key had done it; taking over second place put him in a transfer spot, and the University of Central Missouri sophomore held on to make the transfer. Just two other drivers were able to accomplish the feat of making the LCQ after racing in a C-Main.
Another 12-lap event, the last chance qualifier took the top eight to the A-Main, but Key would start from 15th. Only able to gain three positions, Key ultimately found himself just four positions away from transferring to the night’s outlaw nonwing feature race.
