Key Seizes Independence Day Runner-Up

SWEET SPRINGS, Mo. – Back behind the wheel for just the second time all season, Kameron Key showed that little was lost over his time away from racing. A failure to finish in his first outing several weeks ago left the University of Central Missouri sophomore hungry for a strong finish. Exuding confidence on the track and putting the car where it needed to be resulted in a runner-up finish at the “John Hinck Memorial” race on Saturday night.
Sweet Springs Motorsports Complex would again host one of its most frequent winners over the past few seasons in Key, who won the A-Class championship in 2012. 24 nonwing class competitors signed in to race for the $500 prize that would go to a lucky top-five finisher in the main event. Three heat races were on tap in the division, with Key going from inside row two of heat one. It looked as though a fourth-place finish there was coming, he charged forward two spots in the late stage of the ten-lap race to finish second.
The usual points invert was out of play for the special occasion, with feature lineups instead determined in a heads-up manner. Key would be starting fourth on the grid for the 30-lap championship race, with 2013 multi class champion Austin Schaeffer starting to his inside. From the onset, the track was fast, with the high side of the speedway the preferred lane, though extremely treacherous. The running order stayed similar for much of the first ten laps, with an epic festival of slidejobs coming near the halfway point. Key would both enter and emerge from that battle in fourth, with the order ahead and behind him shuffled. The late events of the race would again benefit the Warrensburg, Mo. native. When the second place car went wildly flipping on the cushion with under five to go, Key inherited the third position. Another caution late would spur a green-white-checkered finish. After taking the white, he dove under seventh-starting Nick Howard in an attempt to take over second. Howard rallied back by, but Key gathered himself down the back straight. When Howard again tried the high line, Key took a second shot at a slidejob, and this one stuck. Key powered off of turn four and to the stripe, earning the second step on the podium.
