Quartet of top-10 finishes for Sanders in Minnesota USMTS run
Rodney Sanders turned in four consecutive top-10 results in Summit USMTS competition in Minnesota from Thursday through Sunday, and he did so with two cars.
On Thursday, Sanders was one of 21 USMTS competitors at the half-mile Fairmont Raceway in the 11th annual Summer Spectacular. He was runner-up in his heat race aboard his ARMI Contractors No. 20 Modified and went on to start eighth and finish fifth in the 25-lap, $3,000-to-win feature. He took the checkered flag chasing Joe Chisholm, Gary Christian, Tanner Mullens and Terry Phillips.
The next night was the start of the fifth annual Mod Wars program; the three-day event kicked off at the quarter-mile Princeton Speedway with 29 USMTS Modifieds. Sanders took third in his heat, positioning him ninth on the grid to start the $5,000-to-win main event. He picked up one spot and finished eighth in the 40-lapper.
Saturday saw the Mod Wars schedule shift to Ogilvie Raceway, where Sanders switched to his backup car for the $5,000-to-win show attracting 36 Modifieds. He took second in his heat and marched from his seventh-place starting position in the 40-lap A-Main to finish as runner-up on the 3/8-mile track. He came home just 0.128 seconds behind Joe Chisholm. Mullens took third, with Jody Bellefeuille finishing fourth and Landon Atkinson claiming the fifth spot.
The four-day stretch of racing wrapped up with the 21-car Mod Wars finale at the 3/8-mile Granite City Motor Park in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, on Sunday night. Again in his backup car, Sanders drove to seventh in his heat race, starting him 13th in the 40-lap, $5,000-to-win main event. He advanced eight spots and finished fifth after Mullens, Joe Chisholm, Joseph Thomas and Zach Benson.
With the four-day Minnesota slate in the rearview mirror, Sanders remains atop the Summit USMTS National Championship standings.
