Wheeler Wins Saturday Showdown At Southern Oregon With Dave’s Home Supply Iron Head Sprints
By Ben Deatherage
White City, Oregon- Saturday, May 18th, would have an incredible finish to the Dave’s Home Supply Iron Head Sprint Series doubleheader weekend at Southern Oregon Speedway.  Sixteen cars, each finely tuned and ready for action, would occupy the pit area at the thrilling 3/8-mile clay oval, creating an atmosphere of anticipation and excitement.

Grants Pass’ R.J. McGahuey seized the race lead from the get-go, setting the stage for a thrilling battle.  Despite his best efforts to build a significant lead, he was chased down by Blaine Cory from Central Point on the eighth circuit.  Racing for car owner Brandon Governor, Cory pushed hard to create a gap over the second and third-place runners McGahuey and Jake Wheeler. However, the relentless pursuit of these two drivers saw them catch up with the leader by lap twelve.

McGahuey briefly reobtained the top spot, but unfortunately, a yellow flag for debris came out, and Cory was reinstalled in first place. When the race resumed, Wheeler, from Central Point and in the Roger Henderson-owned mount, made a power move around McGahuey for second, while Cory took off with the lead.

As the feature drew to a close, Cory encountered slower traffic, creating an opportunity for Wheeler to narrow the gap.  The two drivers, displaying their exceptional skill and unwavering determination, engaged in a fierce battle for the final few laps. In a move that showcased his prowess, Wheeler executed a decisive maneuver on the inside line in turn two on lap twenty-three, securing a well-deserved victory.

Cory was a respectable second, followed by McGahuey, who was third.  Eagle Point pilot Johnny Burke ended the event fourth, while Steven Snawder, from Roseburg, took home fifth.

The Dave’s Home Supply Iron Head Sprint Series will be back in action on Saturday, June 15th at Willamette Speedway, in Lebanon. For more information, visit www.ironheadsprints.com.
