Can-Am’s 900th Checkered Moment: A Milestone Night for the Modifieds
The Can Am Speedway in Lafargeville New York is set to get back to regular Friday night action with five divisions on the card, however this evening is a particularly big night for the Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTcar 358 Modifieds.
On a 60 degree day on June 14th 1974 Jim Clark wheeled his famous number 545 Modified to the first ever checkered flag at what was then known as, Winner’s Circle Speedway. This would be the first of 899 feature events between the Big Block and 358 Modified divisions at what we now know as the Can Am Speedway.
The winner of Friday nights Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTcar 358 Modified feature, will go into the record books as the winner of the tracks 900th modified feature ever held at the speedway. Over the years 6 of the previous 8 milestone features have been won by Northeast Modified Hall of Famers with three former track champions, Dave Heaslip (200th), Pat Ward (700th) and Billy Dunn (800th) claiming milestone wins. The late Bob McCreadie claimed the 100th Modified win on August 9th 1980 and the 600th Modified win on May 1st of 2004, the only driver to win multiple milestone features.
Who will claim the win on Friday night, we will see at the end of 25 very fast laps. In addition, the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman will be on hand along with the Panther Frameworx Crate Sprints, plus Donath Motorwork Limited Sportsman and the popular Sundance Leisure Thundercars. DJ DREX will be in the midway before the races and Encompass Recreation on hand as the weekly featured non-profit plus National Anthems to be sung by the talented Brinley Meeks.
