Inside Line Promotions – BRANDON, S.D. (Sept. 1, 2024) – Michael “Buddy” Kofoid etched his name into sprint car history on Sunday night at Huset’s Speedway, where he earned the $100,000 top prize after outlasting Carson Macedo in a thrilling BillionAuto.com Huset’s High Bank Nationals presented by MENARDS main event.
It marked the first crown jewel triumph for Kofoid and his second career World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series victory at Huset’s Speedway, where he became the 37th different winner in 43 main events this season.
“One hundred thousand, that’s a lot of money,” he said. “I’m kinda at a loss for words.
“Obviously the money is good, but just to win an Outlaws race is so damn hard. If you put yourself in contention it’s bound to happen.”
Kofoid did just that all weekend to line up on the outside of the front row in the 40-lap feature on Myrl & Roy’s Paving Night, which served as the final race of the season at the high-banked track.
Macedo, who was the high-points driver following Saturday’s preliminary night, won a heat race as well as the King of the Hill to garner the pole position for the A Main. He powered into the lead on the start and held the top spot until Kofoid executed a slide job in turns three and four on Lap 24.
Macedo responded with a slide job of his own in the same corners one lap later. He and Kofoid nearly made contact, with Kofoid checking up and Macedo regaining first place. A few laps later Macedo was stuck behind a pair of cars he was attempting to lap, which allowed Kofoid to sneak by on the bottom of turns one and two on Lap 30. Kofoid quickly lapped the two drivers to build approximately a one-second advantage before the final caution of the race occurred on Lap 34.
Kofoid was smooth on the restart and again held a comfortable lead until getting to traffic on the final lap. As he dove low underneath a lapped car and slid up the track in turns three and four, Macedo made a power move, hitting the bottom and sliding across the track directly in front of Kofoid exiting turn four. Macedo’s momentum guided him into the frontstretch wall as Kofoid turned slightly underneath him and won the drag race to the checkered flag by 0.223 seconds.
“Carson and I were going at it pretty good and I could pace him pretty well in traffic,” he said. “We fought pretty hard and almost turned it over when he slid me. I thought that was it. I could just maneuver the bottom really well. I feel that’s what kept me close to him.
“I was trying to watch the board (in the closing laps). I knew traffic was going to play a factor. I got to him a lap earlier than I wanted to. I can’t even think right now. I’m glad we just won this race. Redemption from last year.”
Macedo’s second-place result was his fifth podium outing in his last seven races.
“I didn’t know that I was going to have enough,” he said of the last-lap move. “It gave me just enough of a run where I could throw a Hail Mary at it. It was definitely all I had. I knew that was the only shot I had was to bounce it off the fence and get to the line. Racing for big money is laying it all out there on the line.”
Bill Balog recorded a third-place finish, which was his career-best performance during a World of Outlaws race at Huset’s Speedway.
“This is huge,” he said. “It’s been a really good three days. It’s a huge night for us. We seem to be going in the right direction with this Triple X car. I’m just super happy with tonight.”
Giovanni Scelzi placed fourth and Donny Schatz was fifth.
Kofoid, Schatz and Scelzi joined Macedo as heat race winners. Christopher Thram picked up the Last Chance Showdown victory.
