Dustin Morgan looking for smooth 2013 season
Bryan Hulbert - TULSA, Okla. (February 19, 2013) A nickname bestowed upon him by the Frolic Bar during his days of non-wing racing in Indiana, Dustin Morgan is certainly not afraid to live up to the “Full Blown Chaos” moniker.
With the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by MAVTV American Real opener now only days away in Tucson, Arizona the Ark Wrecking No. 93 will make the trip west to make practice at the Arizona oval this Thursday.
Running the No. 2 in 2012, Dustin was asked why the change back to the No. 93. Simply put, Morgan explained, “It’s just the number that’s been my favorite numbers that I’ve raced with for a good duration when I was younger. Last year my Dad wanted us to get his No. 2 on there for a while but we agreed to go back to the No. 93 cause it’s a number people know me for as well.”
Coming off a fairly successful 2012 season with the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV American Real that included his first National Tour victory at the Cocopah Speedway in Yuma, Ariz., Morgan’s confidence level is much higher going into the Tucson season opener.
“I think we’re going to be better as a team for, only because me and [Jimmy] Jones just have a lot more laps under our belt going into this time than last year” explained Dustin.
Taking more on the season opener, Dustin grouped himself among drivers who are certainly ready to get out of the shop, “Everyone’s got that itch. It’s been a long winter, even though Chili Bowl was here, but we’re just going to go in like we did last year knowing we were quick.”
Referencing Jimmy Jones, who turns the wrenches on the Eaton Industrial Coating No. 2 Maxim, the question was asked as to how the pairing came about. While racing non-wing in California several years ago, Morgan found himself in a situation that he just wasn’t happy with.
Knowing of Jimmy Jones and finding out Jimmy was available to work; the two took time to bring in one of Dustin’s winged cars from Oklahoma and debuted as a team at the Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Ariz. The duo has been together ever since, and as Dustin put it, “We have good relationship working together at the race track, which is hard to find, and so far it’s been working out so why change it. We’ve got a good friendship on the outside of the racing world so that definitely makes it easier.”
Asked about his days in the non-wing cars, Dustin feels that his start without the wings in some ways hurt him as a driver, “I think me starting without the wing, and jumping to the wing kinda made me a little sloppier as a wing driver because I had a real bad shaking problem. I still got it to this day” commented the Owasso driver. “I’m definitely getting better and getting faster, and faster, so now when I jump back into a non-wing deal, I’m a lot smoother than I was back then, but I think, running the winged taught me better habits.”
