Giovanni Scelzi Captures Season-Best Sixth Win During Knoxville Season Finale

Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 26, 2019) – Giovanni Scelzi earned his sixth victory of the season and the second of his career at the famed Knoxville Raceway last Saturday during the track’s season finale.

“It was special to win Doug Clark’s last (410 sprint car) race,” he said in reference to the long-time flagman who is retiring after more than three decades of waving the flags. “He had a make-up race so he couldn’t make it to Victory Lane, but he gave me the thumbs up after I rolled by him. That’s something I’ll hold close to me.”

The night didn’t begin as well for Scelzi and car owner Bernie Stuebgen.

“We didn’t hot lap very good and we qualified eighth quickest (out of 27 drivers), but we changed some things and it was for the better,” he said. “We were good in the heat race. We could run the top or the bottom. I ran Justin (Henderson) down at the end, but didn’t have enough time to make a bid for the lead.”

Scelzi maneuvered from fourth to second in the heat race. He lined up on the outside of the second row for the A Main.

“We ran a lap and the red flag came out,” he said. “Then it started raining. They pulled us off the track for about five minutes. It just misted the track. We had a complete restart and I ran the middle around Brooke (Tatnell) in the first turn for second place. And then I passed Wayne (Johnson) through the middle in turns one and two a couple of laps later. Then I ran the top. There was a restart with two laps to go. Wayne tried to slide me, but I drove around him.”

The six triumphs mark the most wins in a single season for Scelzi, who is in his fourth year of racing sprint cars. He now has 14 career sprint car victories.
