Sweet Steals Night 1 of AGCO Jackson Nationals After Late-Race Pass; Martens Also Victorious at Jackson Motorplex

Inside Line Promotions – JACKSON, Minn. (June 27, 2019) – Brad Sweet capitalized when leader David Gravel ran into trouble in traffic to steal the opening night of the 41st annual AGCO Jackson Nationals on Thursday at Jackson Motorplex.

Sweet, who now leads the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series with six feature victories this season, and Heartland Steel RaceSaver sprint cars presented by Wyffels Hybrids race winner Jake Martens put themselves in the top position thanks to triumphs during the first round of the three-race event. Round 2 is Friday with hot laps scheduled for 7 p.m.

Gravel appeared to have the 30-lap World of Outlaws A Main in hand after fending off Donny Schatz once the drivers reached traffic on Lap 7 of the non-stop race. Meanwhile, Sweet rallied into the runner-up position on Lap 15 before he and Schatz traded second place a handful of times.

Once clear of Schatz, Sweet erased Gravel’s lead, cutting it from a little more than half a second with four laps remaining to less than a quarter second with two laps to go. Gravel stuck to the cushion around the 4/10-mile dirt oval and Sweet focused on the bottom groove. Gravel owned a slight edge going into turn three as the duo split a lapped car. However, another competitor nearly spun in turns three and four, forcing Gravel to dive out of the groove and allowing Sweet to pull away to a win by 0.647 of a second.

“Traffic played out for me,” Sweet said. “I was able to move around and put myself in position. I was hunkered down and determined to catch him.”

Gravel commended his team for a fast race car despite a frustrating finish.

“We lapped a lot of cars and it was like three wide in front of me,” he said. “This car is really, really fast here. As a driver I need to put myself in a better spot. I chose the wrong lane and it bit me.”

Schatz rounded out the podium with Daryn Pittman placing fourth and Brian Brown fifth.

Gravel and Sweet both set quick time during their group’s qualifying session. Gravel, Jacob Allen, Sweet and Justin Henderson were the heat race winners. Brooke Tatnell claimed the C Main, Schatz won the dash and Kerry Madsen was victorious in the Last Chance Showdown. Madsen was also the Hard Charger Award winner in the main event, advancing from 21st to 13th.

Martens was dominant during the Heartland Steel RaceSaver sprint cars presented by Wyffels Hybrids main event, leading all 20 laps and winning by 3.564 seconds.

“This is one of the coolest events going on all year,” he said. “We’ve really got a lot of confidence going on right now.”

Brandon Bosma was the runner up with Kaleb Johnson finishing third, 11th-starting Jody Rosenboom fourth and Monty Ferriera fifth.

Bosma, Trevor Serbus and Clayton Christensen each won a heat race. John Lambertz captured the B Main after starting 12th. He also rallied from 19th to 10th in the main event to garner the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.

There are two days of racing remaining and many activities throughout the weekend, including:

The Lion’s Pancake Breakfast is from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday and Saturday. The Jackson Racing Hall of Fame exhibit inside the red building runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. A bean bag tournament at the beer garden begins at 11 a.m. on Friday and at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

AGCO will host an open house on Friday at the Intivity Center. MRN’s Winged Nation will be on hand showcasing driver interviews and fans can tour the AGCO factory. Winged Nation will also host a pre-race show beginning at 5 p.m. each race night on the Miller Lite Stage.

The Jeremy DeWall Band is live in the beer garden following the races on Friday.

The Huskies Strength and Conditioning 5k starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday. There is also a Meet-and-Greet of several track Hall of Fame members on Saturday at 2 p.m. behind the main grandstand.
