Campbell and Davis win on Thursday; Traugott storms from 20th while Kidwell, Dale, Kinderknecht, and Davis Saturday winners.

A busy end to the month of July brought two nights of racing in three days just before the 10th annual USMTS Sunflower State Showdown is set to kick off the new month on August 5th. Thursday, July 29th was night number six of ASCS Sprint Week. The traveling series was joined by the Chunky Poodle USRA B-Mods and the HeyGlassman.com Stock Cars. Two nights later, the B-Mods and Stock Cars returned to action along with the Alternative Pest Management USRA Modifieds, Two M Motorsports and Machine Rookie Modifieds, and Midwest Wrap Co. IMCA Mod Lites.

Thursday night’s first A-Main featured the HeyGlassman.com Stock Cars. Joey Richmond jumped out to the early lead but Cheney, KS racer Beau Davis wasted little time overtaking the No. 82 less than five laps in. Davis led the rest of the way, Richmond finished second, with Clint Smith, Eric Cross, and George Ramey completing the top 5. Richmond and Scott Squire both claimed heat race wins.

In Thursday’s Chunky Poodle USRA B-Mod race Mexico Missouri’s Cole Campbell made his first visit to 81 Speedway during 2021. Leading from the drop of the green, Campbell faced intense challenge from Tyler Kidwell (driving the Jacob Ellison owned No. 21) and Jeremy Chambers.

Through the first half of the race Kidwell and Chambers appeared content to ride around the Speedway’s top groove nose to tail, both keeping the leader within striking distance. Patience began to wear thing for Chambers on lap 13 but Kidwell kept the No. B52 at bay while keeping focus on the back of Campbells No. 22C.

Trading jabs at each other for the final 7 laps, neither Kidwell nor Chambers were able to land the haymaker needed to steal the win away. Campbell crossed the line first followed by Kidwell, Chambers, Kason Carroll, and Jake Richards. Seth Beard, Chambers and Campbell picked up heat race wins.

After a quick turn around the B-Mods rolled out of the line up area first on Saturday night, and it was two familiar foes who duked it out at the front of the field. Jake Richards led the opening handful of laps before Tyler Kidwell took advantage of a mid-race restart and drove away to his 3rd win at 81 and 13th overall on the year. Richards finished second, defending track champ Kenton Allen came home third, while Travis Johnson and Braden Stoner completed the top 5. Allen, Matthew Crowell, and Stoner made up the top 5.

A severe battle of attrition saw Dakota Dale outlast the field and streak away to his third Two M Motorsports and Machine Rookie Modified win of the season. Points leader Dillon Moler looked poised to re-visit victory lane before Dale drove around the No. 78d with just a handful of laps left. Moler attempted a slider in turns one and two to try and retake the lead but lost the handle and found himself sitting backwards when the caution waved.

At the checker it was Dale, John Cohoon, Brett Davis, and Jim Roney that completed the top 5. Moler recovered late to keep his perfect top 10 streak alive, holding on to the division points lead over Brett Davis as well. Dakota Dale and Chas Klinkner claimed heat race wins.

The Midwest Wrap Co IMCA Mod Lites put on another entertaining show as Ryan Ayers battled with Kaden Cochrun and Justin Kinderknecht when the green flag waved. Ayers would lead over half the event before Kinderknecht found what he needed on the bottom of the racetrack to wrestle the lead away. As Kinderknecht streaked away, Cochrun and Ayers continued their fierce battle for second. At the checkers Kinderknecht won, Ayers bested Cochrun for second, Clayton Hogie finished third and Alex Loveless completed the top 5. Ayers picked up the lone heat race win.

Beau Davis doubled up on the weekend and left with some extra cash in his pocket when multiple sponsors pooled $400 together to offer a challenge to the driver of the No. 01x machine. Start from the back, win, and the bonus is yours.

Davis took the challenge and navigated his way through the field stealing the lead away from Joey Richmond with just five laps remaining. Richmond began searching the racing surface for a way back by the No. 01x, but in the end Davis proved too strong and raced away with the win. Division points leader Clint Smith snuck by Richmond for second, Richmond held on for third, while AJ Finch and Austin Ramey completed the top 5. Smith and Chris Holle each picked up heat race wins.

In what could be called a “tune up” before taking on the best of the best with the USMTS ahead of the upcoming Sunflower State Showdown, the Alternative Pest Management USRA Modifieds produced yet another fantastic feature event to end the night.

Lucas Gibbs blasted away from his outside front row starting spot take the early lead while Chris Kratzer and Tyler Davis immediately gave chase. Gibbs’ lead was short lived when the No. 151 made heavy contact with the outside retaining wall in turns one and two.

The impending restart saw Tyler Davis steal the lead away from Kratzer. Once the field sorted itself out Davis started to inch away from the No. 19r but the man on the move was division points leader Cole Traugott. Racing to the top five just five laps in, Traugott methodically worked his way to the runner up spot by lap 14 just before the caution flag waved. On the following restart Davis lost the handle on his No. 65 machine handing the lead over to Traugott in car No. 9.

It was all Traugott from there, with Tad Davis, Scott Green, Brandon Givens, and Greg Burt making up the top 5. Heat race wins on the evening went to Tyler Davis, Lucas Gibbs, and Chris Kratzer.
