Midget & Micro Weekend for Fischer Racing
Fischer Racing completed a double-header weekend at Creek County Speedway in Kellyville, OK on 4/26 and Port City Raceway (PCR) in Tulsa, OK on 4/27. To add to the excitement, Hunter Fischer also competed in the 600cc non-wing micro at PCR. This made the team’s first outing in the midget since getting the motor together.
Coming fresh out of the garage, we hoped to have everything in line for a good start to the season. Drawing high, the Flying Tee Golf sponsored #24 started in the back of Heat 1 in P8. Creek County Speedway is a nice ¼ mile track and takes a good setup to hold onto the track. On the drop of the green flag, some cars didn’t have that setup and spun in turn 1. Hunter avoided getting collected but didn’t get away unscathed. Clipping another car with the right-rear tire, the torsion bar stop stripped and fell off the car. Hunter did his best to stay on the track and finish the heat, but not having any support in the corners proved to be a fruitless effort and caused him to pull into the infield.
Relegated to start P8 in the B Feature, we made our play for the 4 transfer spots. Hunter was able to pilot up to the 3rd position, but a myriad of cautions and setup challenges began to take effect. The high side began to fail allowing the 4th, 5th, and 6th place cars to make a challenge for the last 2 transfer spots. Racing to the line, Hunter missed 4th by .024 seconds and 5th by .001 seconds according to the timing loop, settling us in 6th for the night and missing the A feature.
Port City Raceway is one of Fischer Racing’s favorite tracks and (we believe) is as technical as the Chili Bowl. Hunter started in Jr. Sprints at this track when he was 6 years old. In addition to piloting the B&C Custom Woodworks sponsored #24 midget, Hunter would also compete in the #17 Skip’s Performance Corner (SPC) house car in the 600cc Non-wing micro division.
Starting in the micro, the SPC #17 started P5 in the 1st heat, but it didn’t yield any real estate with an already slick track and finished 5th. Having 32 cars in the field, this placed Hunter on the pole of the B Feature. 24 midgets showed up for the POWRi West race at PCR and we drew a P3 starting position in the 4th heat. Driving a good race and having a decent setup allowed a solid 4th place finish and trip to the A Feature. Running the 600cc B feature just before intermission, Hunter took the green flag and gapped the field. Unfortunately, this race was plagued by spinning cars and kept bunching up the field (the race took 22 minutes all together). The Honda powered #17 stayed in the lead until the last caution, and about 3 laps to go, where the 2nd place car was able to make it around the high side and take the win. Placing in 2nd put Hunter in the A feature on the outside of the 9th row (18th).
The non-wing A feature tested the drivers with a slick track. At the drop of the green flag, the car in front of Hunter spun in Turn 1. With no place to go, contact was made and bent the front axle and radius rods. The car was still able to roll (with a lot of toe out) and Hunter was determined to stay in the race to salvage as many points as he could. Slowly but surely, he drove the car through the field in spite of the wonky steering and finished 11th. The knowledge gained from that race helped setup the midget for the final A feature of the night. Hunter noticed the track was beginning to take rubber and adjustments were made accordingly. Starting 13th in a 23 car field, the small 1/8th mile track was crowded to say the least. One by one, Hunter picked off a car at a time using the bottom groove, making his way up to 6th after several red flags stoppages. On the last caution, Hunter’s brakes began to fade and allowed 2 cars to squeeze underneath him to finish 8th overall. It was a solid top 10 for the team and made for a very tired driver at the end of the night!
