Rough Riding in OKC

The Flying Tee sponsored #24, driven by Hunter Fischer, returned to Oklahoma City’s I-44 Riverside Speedway for race #4 of the POWRi West Midget League. With a lot of determination and help from the racing family, the team was able to overcome the previous episode’s gremlins, to start outside the second row in heat 3. The Esslinger power kept us near the front of the pack until a fuel issue pulled the team to the infield.

Unfettered by the challenge of a B feature, confidence was high that the A feature was within grasp. Starting in position 7 of 9 cars, Hunter survived an early caution and jumped onto the rear bumper of the leader within a couple of 1/5 mile laps. A wreck on the front stretch took out half the cars and the competition was shortened to save time. 2nd place was good enough to make the A feature.

Twenty cars started the 25 lap A feature, teeing up Hunter in the 18th position. It was going to be a “Long Drive” to get to the front, but the 340HP methanol fueled rocket was up to the challenge. Showing great skill and patience, our young driver piloted the #24 through the field. The track was showing to be a difficult challenge for many drivers as ruts formed on the high side of turns 3 & 4. While trying to find a way around cars that were running the bottom groove, the violent thrashing through the corners up top took its toll on the Stealth chassis. Upon one of the hard landings, a chrome-moly heim snapped in half, disabling the Fischer Racing entry from competition. The track also claimed another 6 victims before the night was over. The 20th place finish wasn’t indicative of the hard work the team put in for this race, but we are encouraged for next week.

Many thanks goes out to our sponsors: Flying Tee Golf on the Riverwalk in Jenks, B&C Custom Woodworks in Tulsa, Bolted Spine Designs, FabTech, and Skips Performance Corner.

Our next two races are 5/4-5/5 at the Missouri Midget Nationals, held in Grain Valley, MO (Valley Speedway) and Wheatland, MO (Lucas Oil Speedway). If you are in the area, please say “Hello!”
