X-1 Race Cars Show Continued Success With Driver Larry Wight
Inside Line Promotions – LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Oct. 1, 2018) – Larry Wight is a full-time modified driver, but he averages 12-to-15 sprint car races a year when the opportunity presents itself. Most often, that is during Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints shows when they are in his hometown area of Fulton, N.Y.
“We got our X-1 Race Car in January of this year and headed down to Ocala with it,” Wight said. “We had some good success down there and it has only continued up here in New York.”
When running with the Empire Super Sprints, Wight said they can be often found finishing in the top five if not the top three. He has recorded six top-three finishes this year and has won two races, which came on back-to-back weekends.
“We won the first race at Fulton Speedway and the second one at Can-Am Speedway in LaFargeville, N.Y.,” he said. “At Fulton we blew a motor in the heat race. My shop is about two miles down the road so we ran down there, got the spare motor and changed it at the track. We made it out just in time for the B Main, where we went on to win. I started 19th in the A Main and won it on the last lap.”
Wight hasn’t always run an X-1 Race Car. He previously competed with two different manufacturers. At the end of last season Wight was looking to replace a frame that had been bent and partnered up with Jason Barney to try out the X-1.
“We feel that the cars are very responsive,” Wight said. “You can feel any little change you make in the car and it’s pretty versatile. Wherever we go, we’ve got kind of a baseline setup that we can take and fine-tune when we get on the track. We also appreciate the make of the car. You can tell by looking at the weld and fittings that everything is made piece by piece and is meticulous.”
Wight has two more races this season. He’ll head to Utica Rome Speedway in Vernon, N.Y., and Fulton Speedway once more each.
