Brian Shirley notches 12th-place finish in I-80 Nationals
On Tuesday, Bob Cullen Racing and Brian Shirley made a mid-week trip to I-80 Speedway (Greenwood, Neb.) to kick off five consecutive nights of racing with prelims leading up to the I-80 Nationals finale on Wednesday. In a field of 43 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) entries, Brian secured his spot into the preliminary feature with a third-place finish in his heat. For another $7,000-to-win preliminary feature on Wednesday, Shirley posted a seventh-place finish in his heat, transferring him into the B-Main. Needing to place third or better to make the show, Brian fell short with a sixth-place finish.
With preliminary results from Tuesday and Wednesday setting the grid for the $30,000-to-win I-80 Nationals on Thursday evening, Brian rolled off on the pole of his B-Main for another chance into the main event. Scoring a third-place finish, Shirley locked into the 24th-starting position. Coming two spots shy of a Top-10 finish, Brian Shirley advanced through the field 12 spots in the 53-lapper to place 12th.
On Friday afternoon for a pair of heat races to get the 11th annual Imperial Tile Silver Dollar Nationals underway, Shirley secured his spot into Saturday’s finale with a heat win and a third-place finish.
With $53,000 on the line, Brian dropped outside the top-five following lap-22 restart and wound up 16th when the checkered flag flew at the end of the 80-lap affair.
