Starks Produces Back-to-Back Top 10s at Skagit Speedway

Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (June 1, 2021) – Trey Starks has earned a top-10 finish during each of his two recent visits to Skagit Speedway.

More importantly, Starks has been in contention to win each night before a mishap dropped him in the results.

“We’ve been good; just haven’t been able to execute,” he said. “We have been really fast, but have run into issues, mostly self-inflicted. I’m not satisfied with running second so I’d rather have speed and a chance to win and not win than to not be in that position.”

Starks made his season debut in his family owned No. 55 on May 22. He qualified third quickest and won a heat race from third. That lined Starks up fourth for the A Main.

“I was running second the whole time,” he said. “I saw my opportunity and the gap closed up. We ended up getting into a lapped car so we had to go to the back. We passed a couple right at the end to get back to seventh.”

Starks returned to the dirt oval last Saturday when he set quick time during qualifying and advanced from fourth to second in a heat race. He started the A Main on the pole and led until a restart with two laps remaining.

“I made the wrong decision on a restart and was too predictable,” he said. “It was a good race to run second. There was a lot of lapped traffic. The guys behind me could choose to go where I didn’t go. The same thing happened on the restart. I tried to keep my car straight and my speed up around the top. I left the door open for a slider. I crossed over and got pinched and didn’t get him. Then I got a big run around the top in turns one and two. He protected going into turn three. I got up on the infield a little, which upset the car and we spun out. I was trying too hard to win on the last corner and got into the infield a little and that’s all it took.”

Starks was credited with a 10th-place result.

“We’re trying to tune in for Dirt Cup,” he said. “The car speed has been really good. We have a few tweaks to make to race a little better. Our speed in open track is really good, but we need a little when we are behind cars.

“The track was a little different each night so I think we’ve seen variety and had speed at both of them, which is good.”

Starks plans to race this Saturday at either Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash., or at Skagit Speedway.
