Chase Johnson Earns First Career USAC Western States Midget Victory

Inside Line Promotions – VENTURA, Calif. (Oct. 28, 2019) – Chase Johnson continued to reach new heights during his breakout season as he captured his ninth triumph of the year last Saturday at Ventura Raceway.

Johnson made the most of his debut with Rodela/Malloy by earning his first career USAC Western States midget victory. It was his second midget win of the year and third of his career.

“Right away I was really comfortable in the car,” Johnson said. “They have great, top-of-the-line stuff. I knew we had a good shot at doing well. I felt like if I did my job correctly we’d have no issues with the car and would be in good shape. That’s exactly what happened. We were fastest in hot laps.”

Johnson qualified fourth quickest before he powered from fifth to win a heat race.

“We made our way to the front in a hurry,” he said. “I think we were in the lead by Lap 3 or Lap 4. It shows how fast the car was. You had to finish in the top four in the heat to be in the feature inversion.”

A six-car inversion lined Johnson up on the inside of the second row for the main event.

“On the first start coming out of the second corner we had the lead,” he said. “I had a great start, but there was a yellow and we had a complete restart. The second time around everyone caught on to my moves so they got a better start and I didn’t get as good of a start. I fell back to fourth and ran there for a lap or two. We slowly made our way forward. We got to second within the first five laps. I had to be patient in traffic. That was a big thing because of how many cars there were. There weren’t any yellows after the initial start. I had to be patient and take care of the car.”

Johnson took the top spot near the midpoint of the race and he cruised to Victory Lane.

“Once we took the lead we made good decisions in traffic and stayed clean and nobody really challenged us,” he said.

Johnson will make his final winged sprint car start of the season this Saturday at Stockton Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif., with the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series.
