Inside Line Promotions – WATSONVILLE, Calif. (June 13, 2016) – Chase Johnson was on pace for another top-five finish last Friday at Ocean Speedway before he was involved in a crash.
“The night started off really good,” he said. “I was looking for a really good result, but I got caught up in someone else’s mess in the feature and that gave us a DNF.”
Johnson kicked off the event by qualifying fifth quickest. He then finished third in a heat race to lock himself in the dash redraw, where he pulled the No. 6 to line up on the outside of the third row for the dash.
Johnson picked up a position in the dash to finish fifth, which started him on the inside of the third row for the feature.
“We felt loose right out of the box to start the night,” he said. “We were struggling to get a handle on the setup and we threw everything we had at it for the A Main. I really couldn’t tell a difference in the A Main. We definitely had a top-five car, but I’m not sure how much further forward we could have gone because I was struggling with the handling on it.”
Johnson battled for a top five throughout the first third of the feature before he was run into by another car around Lap 8.
“The leaders were swapping sliders back and forth,” he said. “One of them got halfway turned around and drove back down the track. When they did that we were there. It got the right rear and destroyed that wheel and it bent the rear end.”
Johnson was unable to finish the race and he was credited with a 14th-place result.
He will return to action with Shawn and Cyndi Thomas this Saturday at Stockton Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif., with the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series.
“I’m really excited to get back to Stockton with them,” Johnson said. “I felt like we left off on a really strong note and I’m looking to carry on that momentum.”
