Inside Line Promotions – BYERS, Colo. (June 27, 2016) – Zach Blurton has put together quite a month without finishing outside of the top eight and this past weekend he scored his second win of the season.
“We started the year with a new car and I just couldn’t get comfortable in it,” he said. “We struggled and struggled with it. It would never do the same thing twice. So a couple of weeks ago we put our JEI back together. This thing is a 2011 and a former World of Outlaws car and probably has 300 races on it. But it just works. It gives me more confidence.”
Blurton ran two features – one from an earlier season rain out – last Saturday at Colorado Motorsports Park. In the make-up event he started last – 16th – and drove to a fifth-place finish. In the night’s regular show he won a heat race before starting fourth in the feature, quickly driving into the lead and holding on for the win.
“In the first feature I just needed another caution and I might have won that one,” he said. “We only had one yellow in the feature. It felt great to end the night with the win, especially since we had family from California here.”
Last weekend began on Friday when Blurton traveled to Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Neb., to compete with the Sprint Series of Nebraska. His night opened with a second-place run in his heat race, which put him in the redraw for the top eight starting positions in the feature.
“The redraw was a little interesting,” he said. “I picked my helper Bryce out of the stands and we were given a frozen t-shirt. The order you got it unbroken and put on is how you lined up for the feature. We started seventh.
“It was a stacked field. This is one of the toughest weekly 305 fields in the nation. In the feature I found the bottom early while everyone else was up trying to knock the wall down. I cruised up to fourth with three laps to go. I caught the leaders and they were battling. I just needed a few more laps and it would have been very interesting.”
Blurton finished fourth. He is slated to compete this Friday and Saturday at Dodge City Raceway Park in Dodge City, Kan., during the 305 portion of the Steve King Memorial and on Sunday at WaKeeney Speedway in WaKeeney, Kan., with the URSS Series.
“We have a big weekend of racing coming up,” he said. “Heck, we’re going to be very busy over the rest of the year. I’m very confident after the weekend we just had.”
