Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 31, 2016) – White Lightning Motorsports wrapped up the season at Knoxville Raceway with a pair of top-10 finishes last Saturday.
Devin Kline led the way in the 305ci class with a podium result, which locked him into a second-place finish in the championship standings.
Kline opened the night by qualifying second quickest before he charged from sixth to win a heat race.
“For as much rain as we had and I drew the first session (for qualifying) I was worried about that,” he said. “Second quick was pretty good and then the heat race was phenomenal. Everyone went down low and left the top open. I was in second out of turn two and passed for the lead coming out of turn four.”
That lined Kline up on the inside of the third row for the main event.
“It was a fast track,” he said. “I was up to fourth right away. After a restart I was able to work my way up to third and into second for a while. If I made a few better choices I could have had a shot at the end. The top four was within a second at the checkered flag. All around it was a pretty good night.”
Kline posted a third-place result to give him 12 top fives during 15 races this season.
Teammate Jamie Ball earned his 19th top 10 of the season. He qualified seventh quickest and finished third in a heat race to line up seventh for the 360ci main event.
“It was a disappointing way to end the season at Knoxville,” he said. “We missed our qualifying a little and timed in seventh. About three thousandths of a second was the difference between sixth or seventh and it would have put us on the pole of the feature if we would have timed in sixth.
“(In the feature) it was hard racing for a solid top-10 finish. We definitely wanted a better finish. On the restarts I kept going to the bottom and the dirty air gave it a nasty push on the right front. I needed to make some better decisions on entry to the corner. It seemed like every time I went up top in the race someone would pass me. On the restarts I should have sailed it on the top with how slow the bottom was.”
Ball ended with a sixth-place finish to place sixth in the Knoxville Raceway championship standings.
He will return to action this Friday and Sunday at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour during the AGCO Jackson Nationals.
