Swindell tops 2013 Lucas Oil ASCS Speedweek

Bryan Hulbert - TULSA, Okla. (June 24, 2013) The 2013 ASCS Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek came to a close on Saturday, June 22 at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. with Jeff Swindell adding his name to the list of Speedweek winners.

The ninth different champion of the ASCS Speedweek, Swindell swapped the points lead with two time Speedweek Champion Jason Johnson four times before securing the lead with a win at the Creek County Speedway on Thursday, June 20, after Johnson fell out on Lap 15 following an incident with Christopher Bell.

Averaging a second place finish during Speedweek competition, Swindell never finished off the podium with win, place, and show evenly split over the six nights of racing to earn the Bob Westphal Memorial Trophy as well as a Shaver/Wesmar Gear Drive.

While Swindell holds the bragging rights of Speedweek champion for 2013, putting together six consecutive podium finishes has also boosted the driver of the H&H Container Services No.94 from seventh in driver standings, entering the Kennedale Speedway Park on June 14, to third after June 22 at the Lucas Oil Speedway.

Swindell’s first Speedweek title included victories at the Lawton Speedway on Wednesday, June 19 and Creek County Speedway on Thursday, June 20. Each was a first for Swindell in Lucas Oil ASCS competition.

For the second consecutive year, Jason Johnson ended his Speedweek runner up in diver standings. Ending up 77 points removed from the Speedweek title, Johnson’s Speedweek record included a win at the Kennedale Speedway Park on Friday, June 14, five top fives’, and five top ten finishes.

Brad Loyet grabbed third with four top fives’ and five top tens’ followed by Johnny Herrera who captured his third victory of 2013 at the Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday, June 15 along with a pair of top fives’ and four top tens’.

Tony Bruce, Jr. completed the top five in Speedweek standings with three top five finishes and five top tens’. Among Bruce’s accomplishments for the week, the Liberal, Kan. shoe bettered his position in the national driver standings by one to fifth overall. Bruce was also the Speedweek Hard Charger, advancing position 46 times during the week’s Protect the Harvest feature events.

Overall, 99 drivers from 13 states [AR, AZ, CA, IN, IN, KS, LA, MO, NM, OK, TN, TX, WA] and two countries [USA, AUS] took part in the 2013 ASCS Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek and included three ASCS Regions with the Smiley’s Racing Products Lone Star, American Bank of Oklahoma Sooner, and Speedway Motors Warrior Regions each with co-sanctioned events with the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV American Real.

In six nights, five drivers found victory lane. Jason Johnson and Johnny Herrera each recorded victories in Texas with Logan Forler garnering his first triumph of 2013 at the Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La. Swindell’s sweep of Oklahoma venues gave way to Missouri’s Lucas Oil Speedway where, for the second year running, the winning driver of the Speedweek Finale was a first time National Tour winner with Cody Baker in 2012, and Jonathan Cornell in 2013.
