Wednesdays with Wayne – Plenty of Action at Short Track Nationals!
There was plenty of tight action and contact at the Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway near Little Rock, Arkansas, and Wayne Johnson and the Two-C Racing #2c team found themselves in the middle of much of it. The Oklahoma City veteran qualified for yet another finale though, and is now focused on this weekend’s ASCS doubleheader at Devil’s Bowl Speedway near Mesquite, Texas.
Thursday’s prelim was not Wayne’s night. Things looked to be starting well as he drove from fourth to second in the heat. “The tie-rod bolt broke in the heat and we lost a spot and finished third,” he says. “We needed to finish a spot better in that one. (Matt) Covington and (Kyle) Bellm got together in front of us in the Qualifier. They ran down the hill and got me.”
The night ended in the B. With a fresh start on Friday, things were looking better. He would win his heat after starting third. “The car felt really good Friday in the heat,” says Wayne. “It was almost too good, because we ran into the back of (Cody Gardner). It was my fault. He checked up more than I thought he was going to. That spun us out in the Qualifier. We had been second in points going into that, and we came back and got sixth, but that still put us in the B.”
Wayne would win the B and start 15th in the feature. “We just didn’t tighten the car up enough,” he says. “I was afraid to get it too tight. We ended up not going anywhere and finishing 13th in the feature.”
With everything based on points Saturday, Wayne’s finish on Friday put him in decent position. “We were really good on Saturday,” he says. “We were able to go from sixth to third in the heat. With all the points added up, that put us just a car or two out of locking into the feature.”
After starting on the pole of the second B main and winning it, he lined up outside row eight for the finale. “We got a hell of a start in the feature,” says Wayne. “We were up to eleventh or twelfth. Dale Howard bicycled and landed on the front of car. My car actually kept him from turning over. By that time, we were dead last and I stopped the car. It had bent the tie-rod and drag-link and smashed the nose wing a bit. You have to get way up through there to make any more money and I eventually pulled off.”
