Wednesdays with Wayne – Ohio Trip Continues!
(Bill W) May 28, 2014 – The Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team continues their Ohio trip this weekend with a pair of races in the “Buckeye State”. Last weekend saw Wayne time in the top ten both nights at Fremont Speedway with the All Stars. He also competed Monday night with the World of Outlaws in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. This Friday night, the Knoxville, Iowa driver will be competing with the WoO again, this time at Attica Raceway Park. On Saturday, the team plans on competing with the All Stars at Wayne County Speedway near Orrville.
The first night with the All Stars at Fremont started well, but ended with a DNQ. “We were able to get to fourth quick the first night there, but we missed the transfer in the heat and the B main,” says Wayne. “We ended up in the pit area that night. We were good early, but we just never got tight enough.”
With the help of the “Ohio Traveler”, Rick Ferkel, the car was operating well for Sunday night’s finale. Wayne timed in tenth quick, ran third in his heat and won the Dash. “Rick changed a whole bunch of stuff before the second night,” he says. “The car really felt good, especially in the Dash. I think we would have been really good in the feature too.”
‘Would have been’ because Wayne was frustrated by a call from officials when the green flag fell. “They called me for jumping the start,” he says. “They moved me back, and after that, I got mad. I overdrove the car and got a little crazy. That’s a place that’s easy to overdrive the car at. It’s really slick.”
The team would tow to Lawrenceburg on Memorial Day with the Outlaws. The high-banked bullring was heavy. “The racetrack was really rough,” says Wayne. “We didn’t qualify well at all (26th quick). We ran sixth in the heat and they were taking five.”
After moving up to third in the B and qualifying for the feature event, Wayne would go from 24th to 18th in the main event. “We just kind of rode around there,” he says of the feature. “We were able to gain a few spots, but we were just riding around. It was tough to pass.”
A two-race weekend at two more short tracks awaits the team. “Our plan is to run with the Outlaws again at Attica on Friday,” says Wayne. “We’re also planning on running Saturday at Wayne County with the All Stars.”
