Scotty Thiel – Trio Race Weekend

Three nights of IRA Sprint Car racing took place this past weekend for the #64 Scott Thiel Motorsports team. The first two nights brought the team to the Wilmot Raceway and they followed that up with a stop at Angell Park Speedway on Sunday. Scotty would have three nights of solid runs but a few issues along the way impacted the final results.

Night one of the three day weekend started at Wilmot Raceway. Scotty was the 11th car out to qualify and after a 12.678 lap time it was 2nd quick by 0.005 seconds. That would place him to start 4th in the ten lap heat where he would go on to battle for the lead in the first few laps and finally take over the lead and never looked back. Taking home the heat race win and was locked into the nights redraw. Thiel pulled the 3rd starting position pill and would start there for the 30 lap main event. Scotty held the third position in the main event until lap 12 where under caution he would pull off and head to the work area for a flat right rear tire. After coming back on the track he would battle his way to a 13th place finish.

Night two was back at Wilmot Raceway for the Roger Iles memorial event. Thiel was the 31st car out to qualify and put down a 12.847 lap time which was 2nd quick by only 0.002 seconds. That would place him to start in the 4th position again. Thiel pushed up the track on the first lap and fell back to fifth and battled his way to fourth quickly. He was struggling to get into third but would slide his way into third with three laps to go. He ran down the leaders but ran out of laps. He was still able to go into the redraw event based on his qualifying time. He picked the sixth starting spot for the nights 36 lap main event. Thiel would go on and battle for the top five in the first half of the race. Several cautions would hurt Thiel and he struggled to move forward. Jumping the cushion a few laps he fell back to seventh and a late caution came out with seven laps to go. On the restart, Thiel dove down low and came out of turn two in the fifth position. He worked the bottom groove the rest of the race and battled for the third position but at the line he was not able to hold it and would finish in the fourth position.

The final night of the weekend brought the team to the historic Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI for the annual CornFest event. Thiel was the 21st car out to qualify and put down a 12.214 lap time which was 2nd quick yet again. He would start fourth in the heat race event. Thiel charged around the top side of the track and settled into the second position on the first lap of the heat. He battled with the leader but was unable to capture the spot. He would finish second and be in the redraw again. He picked the ninth starting position for the nights 30 lap main event. On the start of the race, Thiel worked the middle groove in turns one and two and came out of turn two in the seventh position. He worked the bottom for most of the event and would pick up several positions in the first ten laps of the race. He found himself in the third position on lap 13 of the race and on the restart he would charge into the second spot. On lap 16, Thiel would charge under the leader and take over the top spot. Several laps later, Thiel jumped the cushion to miss a lap car and ended up bending a lower radius rod and a shock. The car was very difficult to drive and fell back to second. He held on to the car as long as he could but at the finish line he would fall back to the third position. “It was a huge bummer tonight. I didn’t know if we were able to get up front tonight starting that deep on this narrow of a track. We managed to do so right around the half way point. I jumped the cushion super hard in turn three and collected it all back together but I knew something was bent or broke after the fact. It was a hard last six laps as it was all bent up but I’m a little disappointed in a third place run knowing we were capable of winning this thing.” Mentioned Thiel after the event.

The team will be off this coming weekend but will return to action on Labor Day Weekend starting on Saturday September 2nd at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds and following that up on Sunday September 3rd at the 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, WI.

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE). This is good, but can be hard to understand. We simplify this process. The numbering system we use is standard to the torsion bar industries. During our test sessions, data is collected and stored in our software, which then calculates it to a torsion bar size that everyone can understand. We have found 1025 bars that test between a 1012 and a 1036 bar. Our test services take away the guesswork. We provide you with a TORSION BAR RATE. Check out www.torsionbarrate.com for more info!
