Last Minute Change In Plans Yields Victory For John Carney II with Sprint Series of Oklahoma

EL PASO, Texas (April 20, 2016) Sometimes, it’s the last minute plans that work out the best, and for John Carney II, those last minute plans yielded his third victory of the season with the RaceSaver Sprint Series of Oklahoma, and fifth overall as the El Paso, Texas native grabbed the win in his first appearance at the Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore.
The win is John's fifth podium finish in as many races, and puts his win to race ration at .500.
Asked what spurred the sudden decision to race, Carney explained, “I had actually planned on just hanging around the shop and getting caught up on my car and the trailer, then John James called and said he had the 305cid car ready to go so I got to Wichita Falls just in time and we loaded up and went to Ardmore.”
Taking the win in the Heat Race, the night was not going as easy as it looked for Carney, as the team was fighting mechanical issues on the No. 4j.
“In the Heat, we started fourth and the guys on the front row both went middle to bottom so I just stayed high and was able to get around them and with the way they do their points, that put us on the pole and it was a good thing because I didn’t have a lick of brakes,” said Carney.
After bleeding the system over and over without any improvement, the team worked over the entire braking system to make sure everything was in good working order.
“After we looked over everything, it felt a lot better so we thought maybe we had it fixed, but once I got rolling, they went away again,” explained John.
“I had to drive the car a tick different because of that, so it was a good thing we started at the front. I was a little worried when I got to lapped cars, but it was almost like they would just get out of the way so I never had to really worry about not having brakes.”
In the end, Carney topped the field by a half straightaway.
Up next, John Carney II and the John James Racing No. 4j will see two nights of ASCS Regional competition as the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Red River Region presented by Smiley’s Racing Products takes on the Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kan. on Friday, April 22 before teaming up with the Speedway Motors ASCS Warrior Region presented by Impact Signs, Awnings, and Wraps at the Springfield Raceway in Springfield, Mo. on Saturday, April 23.
Both nights can be heard live on Racinboys.com with the purchase of a premium membership.
