Tanner Mullens takes on USMTS Fall Jamboree
A trip to Spring Valley, Minnesota's Deer Creek Speedway was on the docket for Tanner Mullens over the Labor Day holiday weekend. At the “Mecca of Modifieds,” he competed in nearly 50-car Summit USMTS fields on each night of the 26th annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree.
Thursday’s opener at the 3/8-mile clay oval fell to Mother Nature, prompting USMTS officials to change the rest of the event's format to a pair of complete shows, as opposed to points earned on Thursday and Friday lining up the Saturday features.
On Friday, Mullens’ Strength Roofing & Siding No. 02 Modified was among 48 in the USMTS pit area. Its driver was unable to transfer to the feature through his heat race, but Mullens finished fourth in his B-Main to earn a spot in the $5,000-to-win main event. He started 19th in the 40-lapper and recorded a 23rd-place result.
The next night, Mullens was one of 49 USMTS drivers at Deer Creek seeking the $12,000 winner’s share. He took third in his heat, and again raced his way into the feature with a fourth-place result in his B-Main. Mullens started 19th on the grid in the 50-lap finale and climbed one position to finish 18th.
After the Fall Jamboree, Mullens remains sixth in the USMTS point standings.
Sunday’s slated 11th annual USMTS North Iowa Nationals program at Mason City Motor Speedway, postponed from July, was canceled.
