Mullens records top-10 finish in USMTS opener at Rocket Raceway Park
Tanner Mullens unloaded his Mel Hambelton Ford No. 02 Modified on Saturday afternoon at Rocket Raceway Park (Petty, Texas) as the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) kicked off the 2023 season with the 13th annual Spring Nationals.
With 87 Modifieds packed in the pit area for the event condensed to two days by Mother Nature, Tanner followed up the fourth-fastest lap in his time trial group with a third-to-first showing in his heat. Starting the $10,000-to-win main event in fifth, Mullens rallied after an early scuffle to finish ninth.
For Sunday’s program, Mullens was forced to use a provisional into the feature after missing a transfer spot in his heat and B-Main. With $5,000 on the line, Tanner advanced forward 10 positions in the 40-lap affair, salvaging a 17th-place finish.
With the first weekend in the books, Tanner is 14th in the USMTS point standings. The team will return to action on Thursday, March 23rd, at Humboldt Speedway (Humboldt, Kan.) for the King of America XII.
