Carson McCarl – Podium Finish at St. Croix Valley!
(Bill W) May 28, 2014 – A trip north proved to result in a solid podium finish for Carson McCarl and the Mastell Brothers Trailer Service #27 team. The third place run at the St. Croix Valley Raceway in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin was the highlight of a weekend that ended in rear-end issues with the Sprint Invaders at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa. This weekend, the team plans on running with the Sprint Invaders at the Independence Motor Speedway in Independence, Iowa on Friday and at the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday.
The trip to St. Croix Falls was the second one planned this season. The first was rained out. Carson was excited to race near his car owners. “My car owners own the track, so it was really cool to go up there and run for them, their family and their home crowd,” he says. “The car was awesome all night. Austin (McCarl) and Doug (Rankin) did a great job setting it up for me.”
The Altoona, Iowa driver drove a solid heat race. “We started fourth in the heat, and got to second right away,” says Carson. “I was cruising there and telling myself not to do anything stupid. I knew we had the Challenge Race coming up.”
The Challenge Race saw an identical showing. Carson would finish second after starting fourth. “It was exciting,” he says. “I was running third for the longest time. There was a driver up top and one on the bottom. I tried to go between them and I missed the win by a foot and a half. The car was good.”
He would start outside row one for the main event. “(Pole-sitter Rick Kobs) got the jump on me on the start,” says Carson. “He was on the top and I was on the bottom. I was able to get the lead for about a lap. The red came out and I had to go back. I tried to make something happen and I got passed. That was all she wrote, and I ended up finishing third.”
Things got off to about as bad a start as possible in West Burlington. “Going out for hot laps, the push truck ran over us,” says Carson. “I was really low to the ground for a while. I don’t know if it was the effect of the truck being on top of the car or what, but it was disappointing. We were really fast in hot laps and starting out in the heat (in which he was leading).”
At that point, the rear-end gave out, and the night was over for Carson. The team will be ready for Friday night at the Independence Motor Speedway, however. Father Terry won the race there last year.
