Forgettable Weekend for Wimmer
PETERSEN MEDIA: With a brand new XXX chassis put together to take on the World of Outlaws, Brandon Wimmer and his Destiny Motorsports team had one of those weekends they would like to forget about, although they showed plenty of speed all weekend long.
Taking on the World of Outlaws at the I 96 Speedway in Odessa, MI, things got off to a tough start for the Mondak Portables/Rick Rogers Construction/Speedmart backed entry, as a left rear tire let go in hot-laps causing extensive damage.
Thrashing on the car, they just got Wimmer out for qualifications, where he timed in 17th fastest, missing the inversion.
Continuing to repair damage form the tire, Wimmer and his team got the Benic Enterprises/Driver Websites machine on the track for heat race action, and he was able to put on a strong showing.
Starting in the third row, Wimmer found the top of the track to his liking as he worked his way up to the third spot, where he battled Daryn Pitman for the final dash spot.
Though he got up to second, Pitman got back by him and Wimmer settled for third, putting him 17th in the feature event.
When the feature got underway, Wimmer unfortunately got lapped early in the race, and his night was essentially over.
With a caution just after getting lapped, Wimmer lined up in the back of the lead lap cars, and raced his way up to the 13th spot, but being a lap down, he was credited with a 21st place finish.
“Saturday night, our blown tire just put us in catch up mode all night,” he said. “The guys got most of it back together, and we just narrowly made if out for time trials. Then we kept working before the heat, and got going good in the heat, but didn’t make the dash. In the A we were fast, but once we got lapped, we had no chance of improving our positions really, but we were just as fast as some of the best in the business.”
Sunday the team elected to travel to Jacksonville, IL for a MOWA 410 event hoping to learn more about their new car.
Lining up eight in his heat, Wimmer had went to the top of the speedway as he worked his way up to the fifth spot, but contact with the wall flattened his right-rear tire and he was off the track and in the B-main.
Lining up ninth in the B main, Wimmer flew around the Jacksonville Speedway as he worked his way up to the second spot on the slick race track to earn a berth in the feature event, where he would line up in the 17th spot.
In the early portions of the race, Wimmer was able to work inside the top-10 as he got up to the ninth spot when the track began to take rubber.
In line in the rubber, Wimmer elected to dive low to try and take the eighth spot, but he did a 360, and slipped back to the 15th spot, where he would finish.
“Overall it was a weekend that does not have any good results,” he said. “We had a couple incidents both night’s that really set us back. If we don’t blow a tire in hot laps Saturday, we can focus on the car and get it qualifying ready, and on Sunday if I don’t hit the wall, we might end up in the dash, and who knows. But we will take what we learned about our car and move forward.”
Destiny Motorsports would like to thank Mondak Portables, Rick Rogers Construction, Speedmart, Wesmar Racing Engines, Driver Websites, and Benic Enterprises for their support through the 2013 season.
