Consistently Fast: Paul McMahan Seeks to Translate Quick Car into Wins

Paul McMahan has had a fast race car for most of the season with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, he just hasn’t had the best of luck. Last week he was leading a race when a lapped car got into him, ending his night. On other occasions, misfortune has popped up, thwarting several potential strong runs.

McMahan, who drives the No. 51 for CJB Motorsports, looks to turn his luck around this week, as the World of Outlaws hit the track three times, including a visit to 34 Raceway in Iowa. The World of Outlaws will be in action at 34 Raceway on Friday, June 26, with a full night of racing on tap, beginning with hot laps, followed by qualifying time trials, heat races, a dash, Last Chance Showdown and 30-lap main event that will pay $10,000 to the winner.

“We’ve just had some misfortunes and things out of our control happen,” said McMahan of his 2015 season to date. “We are fast, though, and that’s always a positive going in. We haven’t had the season we were hoping for so far, but you can’t dwell on the past. Today is always a new day and you have to be the best you can each time you get in the race car.”

McMahan finished fifth at 34 Raceway last season, after starting on the outside of the third row. He opened the night by turning the second-fastest lap in time trials of the 34 entries. McMahan finished fifth in the second race, which put him in the dash, by way of his qualifying time. In the dash, the veteran driver started seventh and finished sixth. McMahan made his first World of Outlaws start at 34 Raceway in 2013, finishing second.

“The track definitely has its own characteristics and is a fun place to race at,” noted McMahan. “We’ve run well there in the past, so that always makes you anxious to get back to somewhere. We’ve been pretty consistent the last few weeks and like I said before, we have a fast race car and that is what you need every night out here against these guys.”

McMahan enters competition this week sixth in the World of Outlaws championship standings, about 50 markers out of the top-five. The Californian, who now calls the Nashville, Tennessee area home, has won twice this season the series. McMahan was victorious at Perris Auto Speedway in California in April and at Tri-State Speedway in Indiana last month.

The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series is currently in the midst of a 12-race stretch in a 22-day span. The month of July will see the series hit the track 14 times at 10 tracks in five states and one Canadian province.

“The summer months are the best time of the year for me,” noted the veteran driver. “My wife and kids are out here with me and that makes it enjoyable. We are also racing a lot as well, which is great. You want to get rolling at this time of the year and really hit your peak. We just need our luck to turn around and we are looking to have some good luck with all of these races coming up, especially the big-money events.”
