Tuesdays with TMAC – Championship #8 at Huset’s!

(Bill W) September 9, 2014 – When the dust settled Sunday night at Huset’s Speedway near Brandon, South Dakota, it was the McCarl family who found themselves on top. Austin had won the $10,000 feature, and Terry had won his eighth track championship there by a single point over Mark Dobmeier. TMAC also had a fast car at the Cedar Lake Speedway near New Richmond, Wisconsin Saturday night at the Jerry Richert Memorial. After charging from 8th to second, he settled for fourth at the checkers. This weekend finds the Altoona, Iowa driver behind the wheel of Jimmy Davies #99 Thursday in Sprint Invaders action at the Farley Speedway in Iowa. On Friday and Saturday, he’ll compete with the World of Outlaws at the Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa and the Deer Creek Speedway near Spring Valley, Minnesota on Saturday.

The Richert Memorial would see TMAC set quick time over a stout field. “We have the track record there, and we always seem to qualify well at Cedar Lake,” he says. “We were almost three-tenths quicker than the field. I just really like that event. It’s a fun race.”

He would get a great start in the heat race from outside row three. “It cracks me up when people think we jump,” says TMAC. “As soon as the front row is on the gas, you go, and I pay attention to that. Some people don’t know the rules. We are not sitting at a stoplight. The second the front row touches the gas, it’s green…even if someone up there takes off early. Thanks to Tim Engler and Rider engines, my motors take off really well. A little bit of stumble makes a big difference. I know, because I had it for years before Tim Engler helped me.”

He would win going away. “As soon as (pole-sitter Skylar) Prochaska touched the gas, we were gone,” says TMAC. “The car was awesome in hot laps, time trials and in the heat race. I could go anywhere I wanted to go, high or low. I told (crew chief) Doug (Rankin) after the heat that was the most fun I’ve had in a racecar in a long time.”

TMAC would start eighth in the main event. “They reworked the track, and it made it tough,” he says. “I wish they would do it before the classic cars or even the 360’s. It just throws things off as a mechanic. You don’t know whether to tighten things or loosen them up. It makes it pretty tricky for the setup.”

The car felt good, however. “We were good,” says TMAC. “There were some heavy hitters in front of us. We had a great car. I think we were to second (behind Bill Balog) in twelve laps or so. We definitely had a car to beat. I’m just so mad at myself. I got stuck behind a couple of lapped cars and that got me slowed down to their speed. At that point, you’re at the level of a lapped car. The guys behind you are still coming. I got stuck and that’s my fault. Ian (Madsen) and Brooke (Tatnell) got me back and we ended up fourth. It was disappointing, because I feel we had the car to beat.”

TMAC entered Sunday night three points ahead of Dobmeier, and set quick time. “I have to thank Rider engines and A.R.T. chassis,” he says. “We were quick time both nights with a lot of fast cars there. We brought our Nationals car last weekend. There was a lot of money on the line.”

Starting tenth, he would finish seventh in the feature. It would be enough to secure the title. “Actually, even though the track was heavy, I was a little bit loose,” says TMAC. “I was a little conservative. There wasn’t a ton of passing. I could see Mark in front of me. I knew if I ran sixth I would be o.k. if he won. As it turned out, he was second and we were seventh. Doug Wolfgang told me a long time ago that it doesn’t matter if you win by a lap or win by an inch, it still pays the same. I was really pumped about Austin winning. He’s had an amazing record at Huset’s this year.”

TMAC piloted Jeremy Scadden’s #6 at Huset’s this season. “I’m just really happy for Jeremy,” he says. “That’s his home track, and he can say that he’s won a championship there. Not only did he win the one with us, but he was the winning Hobby Stock owner as well.”

TMAC is excited for this weekend’s races. “We’ll also be showing our car at the Clay County Fair in Spencer in the Justice Brothers Booth,” he says. “We’ll be doing that on Friday from 1-4 p.m. That’s something fun that we do every year. We hope to see a lot of fans out there.”
