Tuesdays with TMAC – Down to the Wire at Huset’s!

(Bill W) September 2, 2014 – It all comes down to this Sunday night, when Terry McCarl goes for championship number eight and the $10,000 feature win at the Huset’s Speedway. He holds a slim three-point margin over Mark Dobmeier in the standings. TMAC, who finished third in the Jackson Nationals last weekend, checkered second in last Sunday’s feature event at Huset’s Speedway. The Altoona, Iowa driver will also mix in the $7,000 to win Jerry Richert Memorial at Cedar Lake Speedway near New Richmond, Wisconsin Saturday night.

Friday’s prelim was rained out at Jackson Speedway in Minnesota. Saturday’s finale saw TMAC win his heat from outside row one on a heavy, narrow track. “Fortunately, the draw went our way, so we can’t complain about it,” he says. “It was nice to draw a good number for once.”

TMAC would draw a starting spot inside row two for the ASCS sanctioned main event. He would finish third on a track that kept getting heavier as the night went on. “I think we had a good car, maybe a little better than the guy in front of us,” he says. “We needed traffic, but every time we would hit it, the yellow would come out. We were having a little bit of a fuel problem. We were a little off on the fuel. All in all, we made it out of it in one piece and with a podium finish. We can’t complain too much.”

Sunday night at Huset’s, TMAC timed in third quick and ran third in his heat in the Jeremy Scadden #6 machine. He would line up seventh in the feature. “We were good,” he says. “We really didn’t have anything for Ian (Madsen). He was out in clean air. On our original start we got ahead of him, and I think we had him handled, but that was called back when someone spun out. He got a better jump on the second one and got out ahead of us.”

TMAC would run second to Madsen at the checkers. “He runs the top well and out in clean air, it was tough to hang with him,” he says. “I think there were 39 yellows and four reds. I’m joking, but it was one of those full moon nights where everyone was wanting to crash. We were second, and we can’t complain about that. We got the point lead back from Mark (Dobmeier), and it’s down to the wire.”

This Sunday night will be a big one at Huset’s. “Not only is it $10,000 to win, but it’s coming down to it in points,” says TMAC. “I want to do it more for Jeremy. I wasn’t planning on running for points this year. It would be cool for Jeremy to win it as a car owner. His shop is five minutes from the racetrack. It’s just a little team out of Valley Springs, and it would be fun to beat the Goliath team of Lunstra and Dobmeier.”

A 360 special on Monday night at Huset’s saw TMAC finish fifth in his heat. “We were horrible in the heat race,” he admits. “These titanium left front brake rotors…when you put a new one on, they want to stick and spin you out.”

TMAC would start the feature 15th and come home sixth. “It was tough to find room early on,” he says. “Once we finally cleared some cars, it laid rubber. It was one of those deals where we got to sixth and that was the best we could do. I was proud of Austin. He was fast and got to fourth. I think he had a shot at winning or running second without the rubber. His record at Huset’s this year is awesome.”
