Tuesdays with TMAC – Another Top Ten with the WoO!
(Bill W) March 25, 2014 – Terry McCarl had another solid finish with the World of Outlaws last Saturday night, scoring another top ten in the Country Builders Construction #88 machine. A ninth place finish at the Stockton 99 Dirt Track in front of a packed house in Stockton, California sets up a pair of dates at Merced and Chico this weekend.
The Altoona, Iowa driver drew the first pill to qualify on Saturday. “Throughout the year, you’d like to go out first rather than last, but I’m not sure about Saturday,” says TMAC. “I ran it up there on the top, and it felt pretty good. The drivers started running the bottom of one and two and the top was definitely slower, so we ended up 15th.”
TMAC capitalized on a front row starting spot to record his sixth heat win of the young season. “(15th quick) put us in position, starting beside Jason Meyers on the front row of the heat,” he says. “We were able to get the jump and win the heat race. The car felt pretty good.”
The win put him in the Dash where he started and finished ninth. “We were so good in the heat,” says TMAC. “In the Dash, the car loosened up a little bit, and we ran ninth.”
The main event saw TMAC threaten for a top five after starting ninth. “We got going really well,” he says. “We were up to sixth and battling for fifth at one point. We had a restart come up. We’ve been good on the starts, but the car got a little loose again. I was afraid to tighten it up too much, and I really didn’t read the track right. Turns one and two got really slick. It was a great racetrack…the kind I like, but I just got messed up a little.”
A late race stoppage allowed for some adjustments. “We had a red late in the race, and we were able to make a few changes to get the car better,” says TMAC. “We ended up finishing ninth. All in all, it was another solid weekend for us. We’re really not that far out of tenth in (WoO) points, and that is with us missing a show.”
TMAC has had a fast unit early in the season in Outlaw competition. Friday the WoO heads to Merced Speedway, and on Saturday, it will compete at the Mini-Gold Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. “It feels good to be right there in the game,” he says. “We just have one car and one motor. The motor has eleven nights on it. We’ll run through this weekend, and then probably head home on Monday.”
California fans are sentimental when seeing the candy apple red #88 back on the track. “It’s really fun for me to get the Country Builders Construction #88 back up towards the front where it should be,” says TMAC. “They were a top notch team for so long with Ronnie Day, myself and other drivers. It’s just fun for the fans. We’re getting a lot of positive feedback from them.”

This Month in TMAC History!
In March of 1995, TMAC finished 10th with the World of Outlaws in his first ever appearance at the Battleground Speedway in Houston, Texas. Greg Hodnett drove the Two Winners #8TW to the win ahead of Danny Lasoski, Aaron Berryhill, Gary Wright and Dale Blaney. TMAC would return to Battleground with the WoO later in ’95 (DNF), and in the Holbrook #8h in ’96 (DNF) and ’97 (14th). The track ran its last sprint car race in 2000.
