Tuesdays with TMAC – Good Start with Outlaws!

(Bill W) February 18, 2014 – Terry McCarl shot out to a nice start in World of Outlaws competition at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida last week. He netted fifth and eighth place finishes against the tough contingent assembled. The Altoona, Iowa resident will race at one of his favorite tracks this weekend, East Bay Raceway Park near Tampa for the Ronald Laney Memorial “King of the 360’s”.

TMAC started his 2014 campaign in the #24 with All Star action on Thursday, although he used it mostly to shake things down. “We used Thursday as a bit of a practice session,” he says. “We worked on some little things. We had some front wing issues. We took the green and pulled off in the feature and got ready for the Outlaw shows.”

With the best in the business in the house, things really got going with Friday’s opener for the World of Outlaws. “Volusia is such a great event,” says TMAC. “It’s a tough place to win. The competition is unreal. That’s why winning there last year was such a big deal for us. We’re pretty proud of that. It’s one of the top two or three events as far as the competition you have. Everyone there is capable of winning.”

After qualifying twelfth and running second in the heat, TMAC advanced from ninth to eighth in the Dash putting himself outside of row four for the main event. “We got ourselves into position through the Dash,” he says. “I got a little tight early in the feature and got rolled up. I lost some spots on the start and we were able to get back through there to finish eighth. We were closing on the guys in front of us, and the car was working high and low. We just got a bit of a bad start.”

After the solid start, TMAC kept things rolling on Saturday. He qualified sixteenth, before winning his heat and charging from tenth to seventh in the Dash. “We were able to pass cars in the Dashes both Friday and Saturday,” he says. “That was really a key for us. We were really good Saturday night. We started seventh in the feature and got up to fourth. We ran Paul (McMahan) down for third and had a shot at him a couple of times.”

TMAC actually moved into third briefly. “We were able to get by (McMahan) on a restart, and I just kind of screwed up and missed my marks a couple of times,” he says. “Paul was able to get back by, and Donny (Schatz) got by us too. Cody Darrah got us too, but we settled in a bit and got back by him. We were able to get a nice solid top five and that’s always good with the Outlaws.”

After the impressive run, Sunday saw the best qualifying effort of the week, sixth. “We were fast time for quite a while,” says TMAC. “Everyone is so close there. It was our best qualifying effort of the week, but we just were caught in ‘no-man’s land’ there being sixth quick. We just didn’t get into the top two from inside of row three (in the heat).”

Starting thirteenth in the feature, TMAC began to charge. “It looked like a solid top ten,” he says of his run. “We got up to tenth and we had a restart. I had a guy get underneath me and get me up into the fence. I had to hit the brakes and let him go, and someone got me in the back. We lost several positions and came back to finish fifteenth. Still, something was just a little off on Sunday. The car had been rolling so nice all week. I ran a used tire too, and that may have bit me a little bit.”

The “King of the 360’s” is up next this Thursday through Saturday. TMAC will return behind the wheel of Jeremy Scadden’s #6 machine. “I’m looking forward to running for Jeremy again,” he says. “East Bay is definitely one of my favorite places to race. We have good friends down here like Randy Burnett (Burnett’s Rock and Landscaping) and his family. We also have Myers International Midways. They’ve helped us the last few years too along with Morgan Strawberry Farms, who has been with us a long, long, time.”
