Tuesdays with TMAC – Clean Sweep at Huset’s is #94!
(Bill W) August 20, 2013 – After over a week without racing, Terry McCarl regrouped in style, sweeping qualifying, his heat and the feature on Sunday night at the Huset’s Speedway near Brandon, South Dakota. The win was the Altoona, Iowa driver’s 94th at the 1/3-mile oval.
Things were going well, starting with time trials. “We were one of the later cars to qualify and we were able to set fast time by around two-tenths of a second,” says TMAC. “That was pretty awesome. The Rider engine was running really well.”
TMAC was able to charge forward and win the heat. “We missed a bit of a tangle on the start there,” he says. “We got through that and won the heat.”
TMAC would start sixth in the 25-lap main event. “I was a little tight early, which is normal for me,” he says. “I didn’t get a very good start. I got going well and got to third by the time the yellow came out about five laps in.”
A caution flag changed things. “(Scott) Winters had the lead and (Mark) Dobmeier was in second, so I didn’t have much time to waste,” says TMAC. “Everything was looking good, and that yellow came out. They put me back behind (Dylan) Peterson. I had a bad start and guessed the wrong way that he was going. Lynton (Jeffrey) got by both of us.”
TMAC was able to maneuver back to the third spot. “It took a while to get back by both of them,” he says. “I finally got by those two, and I couldn’t even really see the top two guys. We were running well…I’m not sure what the lap times were, but we were running well. Those guys were out front cruising.”
When the leaders tangled, TMAC assumed the lead and went on to win. “Sometimes, it’s better to be second, and in this case, it was better to be third,” he says. “I guess Scott spun out trying to lap Lynton and took Lynton and Mark out. It was really unfortunate for Lynton. He just got a new car for the Nationals. All he wanted was to not tear anything up that night. The important thing was no one got injured, and that’s the key to every night of racing.”
TMAC has been on the wrong of such situations many times in his career. “A month or so ago, we got the lead and we were checking out,” he says. “We spun out in the lead and I kind of gave one away up there. The way I figure it, this one kind of evens that out.”
TMAC will compete at Season Championship night at the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday. He enters the night third in the point standings. “Things are working well and the car feels great,” he says. “I’m looking forward to championship night here at Knoxville Saturday, and we’ll head to Huset’s on Sunday. There are some big races coming up.”

This Month in TMAC History!
On August 19, 2006, TMAC won the first World of Outlaws race held at the Nodak Speedway in Minot, North Dakota. The largest crowd in the history of the track was on their feet for much of the feature event as TMAC battled with Craig Dollansky and then Donny Schatz. His harder tire choice proved a key, as Schatz lost his right rear late in the race, and Dollansky failed to pass the weight limit. In the end, it was TMAC over Brooke Tatnell, Joey Saldana, Daryn Pittman and Chad Kemenah.
