When the oldest form of organized motorsports and one of the best half miles in America were unable to come together on a race in 2016 fans and riders were highly disappointed. After a more than 38-year relationship with professional Flat Track racing, Hagerstown Speedway found itself without a professional Flat Track race in 2016. That was quickly remedied when the newly formed all professional Flat Track organizer, Steel Shoe Nationals, Ltd contacted track manager Lisa Plessinger. Fans and riders once again rejoiced over its return.
With a very large contingency of professional Flat Track riders from the United States Eastern seaboard, don’t be surprise to see a hometown hero show up on the list of world class riders for this new Steel Shoe Nationals event. The leather clad riders depend more on their raw talent than hi-tech gadgets. Not much has change in the past 30 years. Unlike their asphalt, road-racing counter parts, Flat track is about the rider, a ton of power and slid jobs on dirt with 28 of your sometimes, not so close friends. Not much technology here. The one thing that has changed is the speeds and horsepower. These machines are capable of well over 100 miles per hours and riders rarely lift.
