Hoyt, Herbert Make Big Haul at SCoNE Awards Banquet
Hull, Menditto, Comeau earn special honors
LOUDON, N.H. (November 25, 2024) – A sold-out crowd celebrated the 2024 McGee Automotive Family Sprint Cars of New England (SCoNE) racing season on Saturday, November 23. The top drivers and teams of the SCoNE Tour were honored at the New England Racing Museum on the grounds of New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the first time, and the event quickly became one of the most memorable banquets in SCoNE history.
Campton, New Hampshire’s Matt Hoyt and his family team were honored with laurels for their first SCoNE Tour championship. Among Hoyt’s take during the evening were a $2,000 check from the McGee Automotive Family-sponsored point fund and the first-ever Fred Frame Championship Trophy. Hoyt’s parents, Ed and Pam Hoyt, were also recognized as the championship car owners. Their No. 07 HT Mechanical/David Bourne Construction car posted a victory at Unity Raceway and five other podium finishes in 12 point-counting races one the way to the title.
Caiden Herbert was honored as the SCoNE Rookie of the Year presented by David Bowser Motorsports; the New Hampton, New Hampshire, teenager put together one of the most impressive freshman campaigns since Chris Donnelly’s championship season in his rookie year in 2010. Herbert won an A-Main at Bear Ridge Speedway and finished fourth in SCoNE Tour points.
Hoyt and Herbert were each honored as mini-series champions as well. Herbert’s title came in the inaugural Green Mountain Gear-Heads Championship Series presented by Hull Motorsports – a five-race track championship at Vermont’s Bear Ridge Speedway. Herbert beat Scott Holcomb and Kadyn Berry for the title.
Hoyt received was named the first-ever Maine State Champion after his performances in the three events held at Unity Raceway. Hoyt outdistanced former SCoNE champion Will Hull and fourth-generation driver Nick Comeau for the title; all three were race winners at the historic 1/3-mile track in 2024.
Behind Hoyt in the McGee SCoNE Tour point standings and receiving awards on stage were Hull, Berry, Herbert, and Jake Williams. Nick Comeau was sixth with Floyd Billington, Troy Comeau, Holcomb, and rookie Nick Kruger. Travis Billington and Dylan Menditto, who ranked 11th and 12th, respectively, were also recognized.
Brooklyn, Connecticut, racer Menditto also received the peer-voted Most Improved Driver Award after a breakout season that saw his performance take a marked uptick; he earned the first two top-five finishes of his career in 2024 and also won qualifying heats at three different tracks.
Hull was voted the recipient of the Sportsmanship Award. The Plainfield, Vermont, resident is the 2018 and 2019 SCoNE champion, the organization’s former president, and is a successful engine builder. He is well-known as someone who often provides help to his fellow competitors both at and away from the race track.
Hebron, New Hampshire’s Sam Comeau was surprised with the Mechanic of the Year Award. The father of Nick Comeau, he has been the architect behind his son’s rapid rise on the SCoNE Tour. In addition to managing Nick’s car, he also maintained and drove a car owned by Don Mason and worked on several others.
Seventeen-year-old Berry, of Goffstown, New Hampshire, received his award as the winner of the first-ever Favorite Driver Poll after the season-long fundraiser and fan vote sponsored by Sabil & Sons Transportation. The program was very successful and raised $2,200 for the Friends of Veterans organization in White River Junction, Vermont. Berry received over 31,000 votes during the season, with Hoyt and Herbert finishing second and third.
SCoNE President Justin St. Louis closed the night with two Awards of Appreciation. The first was presented in honor of Jason Quenneville and his McGee Automotive Family dealerships, McGee Mazda and McGee Toyota in Claremont, New Hampshire, and McGee Toyota in Epping, New Hampshire. Quenneville’s commitment to SCoNE has helped expand the championship point fund and create the new Fred Frame Championship Trophy.
The second Appreciation Award was given to Doug and Ashley Whitcomb of Whitcomb Excavation. The Francestown, New Hampshire, couple became major behind-the-scenes players within SCoNE in 2024, volunteering to assist with a wide array of race day operations including track preparation, logistics, souvenir sales, and more, and they also offered cash bonuses for race teams at every event.
